We haven't spent £97m so I don't know where you got that from.

Yes, I have City's total on incoming players this summer at £86,900,000, less the £15,000,000 received for players sold-on.

Which gives a net spend of £71,900,000...

...I've added the Tottenham figures for comparison.

So even without Gareth Bale, the £3m received from our cut of Giovani Dos Santos' move and the £10m+ surplus we had from last summer's player trading, there's only a difference in net spend this summer of around £7.8m between the two clubs.

just looks like a better squad management from city to me(forgetting the money) and even after bales sale where it will look like you have balanced the books

as to quote wenger if you add more than 3 or 4 new players you are stepping into the unknown

adding 7 foreign players( all different nationaities) is a risk don't you think despite the talent they may have

I wouldn't say I was happier now that Bale is leaving, last season he practically carried us, 1 man team so to speak - although many Spurs fans would disagree, but proof is in the pudding.

However, with the new players, it does ease the blow somewhat, and at least on paper we have a much more balanced squad with goals coming from different areas.

I agree with what Wenger has said, it's integrating these players to play as a team, so I'm guessing realistically we'd need at least half the season to start gelling on the pitch. So for me, we are not title challengers, by a long shot.

I believe our target is to get into the top 4, we have been close, we've done it twice in recent years, but with our spend, you'd expect a top 4 position, and at least a decent run in a cup (suspect Europa League to be honest). Adding that many players is a risk, a known risk, I'm not going into the hyper excitement about these players, and still think Arsenal will beat us on Sunday due to them being a much more settled team on the pitch.

If we can scrape through until Christmas in a decent position, we have a good chance of pushing on - but it's Spurs, us Spurs fans know only too well how many times we drop off at the end :-)

But all that said, it's exciting to see us spending to improve us, even after losing our best player, on paper we have a better squad than last season even without Bale.

Just wish the deal would break down and he stayed now ;-)

That was in January 2013, and was €20 million.

Which isn't part of the Summer 2013 transfer window.

It would not surprise me if we are saving around £20m in wages each year. I doubt Spurs are making a saving anywhere near that following the transfer deals in the last few months.

Focusing solely on fees is folly. Not only are you ignoring wages but also loyalty bonuses to those who have left (with those who have them in the contracts) and agents fees. There were references to us saving close to £27m by selling Tevez even though his fee was £12m. Thus, simplying saying we have brought in £12m for Tevez is not strictly true.

Well now you're trying to compare apples with oranges.

Obviously, there is far more to a club's operational expenses than player's transfer fees alone.

And you really only get to see the complete picture when the club issues its annual financial report.

The tables I posted above were strictly limited to transfer fees paid and received for players during the Summer 2013 transfer window - no more and no less.

I do get the net spend argument but the bottom line in gauging where you should finish in the league is the cost of your starting xi - would be interesting to see that now for city, cfc, mu and spurs

To be perfectly honest with you, I really don't know what Tottenham's starting XI is these days - I suspect it will be a case of horses for courses with AVB selecting his starting XI according to the opposition, venue and competition.
