Tottenham have won 6 of their 9 league games, yet only scored 9 goals. 4 of those wins have been 1-0, and 3 of those have been due to a penalty kick. Whilst 19 points from 9 games is a very good return it doesn't take a genius to realise that averaging 1 goal per game, and only scoring 6 goals from "open play" in that time, isn't going to be enough to maintain that level of points return. Defensively Spurs look pretty sound, just the 5 conceded, but in a team with the midfield creativity Spurs have purchased there should be a lot more goals being scored.
They've got the opposite problem to what I expected, and I'm sure most others as well. I thought they'd be free scoring with a soft underbelly. Seems they're really missing Bale even with the huge investment made to replace his contribution.
I was pretty sure our defense would be good this season, not necessarily because we have a terrific set of defenders (Dawson and Naughton have been starting for us, and Walker who I think is pretty good but many here like to say is shit and braindead), but because they are protected by midfielders who are generally pretty good at shutting down attacks (a strength of Capoue, Sandro, Paulinho, and Dembele).
Our lack of goalscoring is a tough situation to analyze. Imo it's largely down to AVB's tactics (which admittedly have also played a role in our defensive form), but we don't take many opportunities to counterattack even though I think that is where the strength of our attacking players lie. I can't think of one of our players who is really suited to the possession-based game that we try to play (except for our back 4 and Lloris). To me, they all seem like players who would be far more dangerous breaking from deep rather than trying to break down a deep defense. It does keep the other team away from our goal though which is why we have so many clean sheets.
I think if our attacking players can adapt to this style and learn to break down defenses that sit so deep we could be very, very good. Our goalscoring will improve in any case, we will definitely get better in an attacking sense when new players adjust to one another and to the league. I don't think we will be a team that batters opponents by 4 or 5 goals very often though.
I think another interesting thing to look at is how many points have been dropped by teams in "should win" games (ie anyone below last year's top 7). Chelsea have won all those games, we've had one slip up (against West Ham), and all the other teams two or more. Liverpool, despite their position, have dropped 7 points against Swansea, Southampton, and Newcastle. So I think even if we haven't been great in an attacking sense, it's good to see us still winning games we should win. Under Redknapp it was the opposite problem which was a lot more frustrating (we would play good football but be a shambles defensively and lose to teams we should beat.
