In response to the OP - if you have been biting your tongue for 3 months, why couldn't you wait another 7 days until the transfer window officially shuts so you can better a more informed judgement.
At the end of the day neither me, you or anyone else on Bluemoon has a clue as to which players we want, why we want those players or how we are conducting our business. You say Barcelona strengthened their squad after they won the treble but you conveniently forget to mention that Real Madrid who won the Spanish league last year haven't made a single signing this summer, despite the public battle for Modric.
We all know because it was made public knowledge of our interest in Van Persie but in our current position we don't need to take gambles on players who are way overpriced and who aren't value for money. United are desperate to win the title back from us so have taken that gamble and it may pay off but I don't think any club with thoughts about long term sustainability would have risked upwards of £40m (transfer fee + wages) on an injury prone 29 year old who will have very little resale value in a couple of years. The Hazard situation was different because as far as we're all aware the fee was agreed with Lille, personal terms were agreed with the player and the only stumbling block was the £4m agent fee that only Chelsea were willing to pay (hence us and United both pulling out of the deal).
As a club we have set out with a very different strategy from previous years because we have refused to pay agent fees, we have refused to pay players contracts up and we have stayed strong in terms of not backing down to the likes of Tevez and Adebayor. Our dealings have been very professional and conducted out of the public eye, we are now trying to forge relationships with other clubs and do deals that are good for us, the selling or buying club and the player involved rather than just throwing money at every situation like we have in the past. So while we may miss out on a couple of targets this window, it will teach clubs who do want to deal with us in the future that we won't be messed around by them, players or agents. Look at the deal for Rodwell - the press knew fuck all until it was done and dusted, we dealt with Moyes in a very dignified manner in comparison to the deal for Lescott and they'll be very happy to deal with us again in the future. That's how business works these days, you have to build relationships and do things professionally or people will not take you seriously. Trust the people in charge, after all we've made significant progress every single year since the takeover on and off the pitch.
