It's a funny one. I like both players, Shaw in particular is going to be England's LB for the forseeable future yet he isn't the finished article by any means. Lallana has worked his way up through the leagues, and has had a very good season, however I cant help but think he's being hyped up in the typical English way we do off the basis of a tidy season in the PL in a team of well drilled and organised players.
If I was Lallana, I'd see this is my only chance to seek that big move. Who's to say he'd replicate last season's performances next season?
Where I'm going with this is that I dont neccessarily see this is ripping the team apart just by letting these two players go for huge sums. I'd have thought Southampton could buy more than adequate replacements for the pair of them and with pocket change left over. They could even put Callum Chambers on the left and see how he performs there. I just think that selling these two wouldn't neccessarily be the start of their downfall, and that it could actually benefit them in the long run.
They do have history of selling their best players for good money, and still managing to bring more through and invest the money back into their squad.
I just think in this instance, if a club like Spurs came in for Pochettino, he would probably look at it and think 'do I stay at a club that are always looking to sell their best assets, or do I go to a club where they are likely to buy a team like Southampton's best assets'
That isn't to say Spurs are a top draw team, but if Pochettino did go to Spurs, you wouldn't be too surprised if you saw Lallana pitch up there, because for me that is Lallana's level, either a Spurs or Liverpool. He isn't going to make an impact at a club like us or Chelsea as I guess we have bigger fish to fry,
Do you see where im going here? Feel free to say no and ill carry on winding auditors up :)
No, I agree with you mate.
My argument is just that I dont think Southampton would neccessarily be worse off selling them both. Pocchetino would be the biggest loss out of all of them (and if Frank de Boer is a no go, then IMO he will be off to Spurs whether Southampton decide to keep Shaw & Lallana or not).
Southampton's biggest job is to find a replacement for Pocchetino if he does go to Spurs. They'll obviously be looking for a continental manager, because there's nobody English who is able to replicate his playing style (IMO), but if they can find someone to replace him, then they'll have £50m to spend on new additions which can certainly cement Southampton's top half status, and perhaps given time, even improve on it with a bit of luck.
It's my belief that Southampton will start next season without Shaw, Lallana or Pocchetino. I just hope that doesn't effect them too much because they've turned into one of my favourite clubs outside of my own. I remember losing 6-0 at Boundary Park only a few years ago to them, whilst they had Lallana, Lambert and The Ox in the starting line up. Their rise since then has been excellent and it'd be a shame for it to all go to waste.
