Tories win Copeland b-election.

Thank you for highlighting my delusion. I am now entirely convinced to the contrary by the strength of your arguments. It's good to know that the Tories have my best interests at heart. I don't understand how I could have been so foolish in the first place.

Maybe you'll reflect on what I said and maybe one day you might indeed believe what you say above. I hope so.

An unopposed Tory government would shift further and further to the right. They need a strong opposition to keep them nearer the centre ground.

Perhaps. First, only if nearer the centre ground is a good thing. (I guess it probably is, but not necessarily) and second, it assumes an inexorable and never ending shift further and further right until Hitler is our PM. This may very well not be true, and in fact it almost certainly isn't. There's a load of "moderate" Tories and the likelihood is that unopposed, the Tories might shift a bit to the right, but not ridiculously so, since there aren't enough voters over there.

There is a distinct possibility that more Labour MP's might now want a 'Change of career' and hand their
notice in on Jezza, then decamp to other occupations. Most of them will now realise they've got as much chance
of government as Phil Jones joining the Chippendales, so expect a few more 'Saddened to leave the party I love,'
speeches.

Dreadful result for Corbyn, sadly there's no opposition party as such.

I do quite like most of Corbyn's ideals but he's part idiot and villified within the media and will never amount to anything.

I would class Corbyn's 'ideals' as 'wishful pie-in-the-sky dreaming'! He belongs to a particular group left of centre who haven't a clue how their support live their lives and how the remaining two-thirds live theirs. He's wrapped up in the usual Westminster political cocoon.

Do you think there's any chance Albert Steptoe will decide to step down? Surely he cannot continue indefinitely in this naive dreamworld where he believes that the droves of hard left supporters in the Labour Party are in any way representative of the population at large? Sooner or later, the penny must drop, surely???

So is it Corbyn's fault for having principles and essentially wanting a fairer society and distribution of wealth or the electorate's for believing that the Tories give a toss about them (unless they have millions in the bank)? After all if 659M* people believe that the scum are god's own football club then by democratic rules this must be true?

Whilst I may be a "far left fruit loop" or mortgage paying family man now having to support his grandchildren because of Tory policies as I prefer to term it, give me a principled politician every day rather than a (B)liar who will say anything to gain and retain power. If this means opposition because the majority are too selfish to see through the lies then so be it. Doing the right thing is rarely easy but it remains the right thing nevertheless.

Not yet, unfortunately for Labour this is a leader who's many years in the party have been spent protesting,
always futilely, about virtually every single proposal put forward by either the Conservatives, Coalitions, or
even his own party. He was completely unfazed by what must have been virulent opposition to his views over the years,
and now, as leader will continue to espouse them despite the nightmare unfolding before his eyes.
The only thing I can see ousting him is if the more moderate Labour supporters begin screaming for his removal,
his speeches around the country play to the same hard left cabal, his sole comfort zone, outside of this,he is lost,
as his feeble attempts at attacking May in the commons prove.
So Albert will remain the boss at Oil Drum lane, Hercules will continue to shit on his doorstep, and 'arold will still
be wringing his hands in despair at how life has treated him.

Corbyn never wanted to be the leader. He'll step down as soon Labour can come up with an alternative hard left candidate, once the left have taken complete control of the party.

I never said he was perfect did I? Nobody is save for our David Silva. But I'll take his principles over those of any Tory you care to choose any day.

If only I'd known that there was such wisdom to be found amongst the posters on this venerable forum I could have cleared up all my obvious delusions years ago!

Perhaps I could step out of the shower like Bobby Ewing and discover that the last 50 years of my life had been but a dream and we all lived in a Tory led utopian paradise!!
