Transfer Strategy

unfortunately none of us know what the transfer budget will be in the summer. Failing to spend big on top quality will result in us becoming like Liverpool this season.
we dont but theres plenty of people like tolmie, and some credible journos say city are expecting a busy summer. i do think we will be going big this summer i dont think the club will allow a liverpool situation especially khaldoon.

Not just about spending big. Benfica, Brighton etc show that you can get excellent players for not very much.

Brighton have never won fuck all despite all those excellent players. If you’re happy with a Europa spot then fine. World class players cost big money that’s where we have to aim. I’m sure the powers that be realise this and hope they produce

Going to be a fascinating summer as we really need a bit of an overhaul. Our squad depth is paper thin and the majority of our most important players are the wrong side of 30
Whilst we technically just about have two players for every position, it feels very thin when you consider Gomez, Palmer, Perrone and Phillips are not genuine contenders for meaningful minutes at the moment.

I feel that this summer could be our biggest outlay since 2017. It could be even bigger than that. I reckon all of the following will go (just my opinion, and the fees are rough estimates which obviously don't give much regard for the complex nature of structuring a deal):

Steffen - £10m.

Gomez - club reportedly say they want £35m, but let's say £28m.

Cancelo - option to buy for £60m, but let's say £50m.

Laporte - I don't want him to go but I feel he wants to move on, so £50m.

Phillips - if West Ham come in with £40m from the Rice proceeds, I think we'll take it.

Palmer - he's not getting as many minutes as expected. I can't see him having another season of this, so I think he's gone for £25m.

Gundogan - free agent.

Bernardo - it's getting increasingly harder to see how he stays - £60m.

Other academy players (Doyle, McAtee, Delap, etc) - arbitrary figure of, say, £60m.

So that gives us a total of £323m in player sales. You can then add in the £35m net spend from last summer, less what we paid for Perrone. All-in-all, we have £350m as a ballpark figure for player sales, plus our usual budget from other revenue streams. It is not inconceivable that we could be talking £400-450m this summer.

With £450m, we need a left-back, a centre-half, a midfielder, a winger and one additional winger or midfielder depending on where we see Foden playing. I'm also not sure where Perrone will play in the midfield three (probably as an 8, but able to cover for Rodri too).

I can therefore see our 23/24 squad looking something like:

Ederson
Ortega
Carson (or a youngster, but it really doesn't matter)

Lewis
Walker (think he'll stay for one more year)

Robinson (I'm putting his name down due to recent links but, again, who knows?)
Ake

Gvardiol
Dias
Stones
Akanji

Rodri
Perrone
De Bruyne
Bellingham
Foden

Grealish
Leao

Mahrez

Haaland
Alvarez

+1 more winger/midfielder

Plenty of width and versatility, but crucially some legs to get us up the park and make our midfield more effective. By the time we're done, we won't get much change out of £400m for Bellingham, Gvardiol, Robinson, Leao, plus one more. And whilst we don't have two players for every position, we also have no passengers. Pep likes a slightly smaller squad anyway. The incomings are speculation but the above is illustrative of the extent of the overhaul needed and likely to come.

I admire your optimism but I can’t see us spending that much.

It does depend on how much we raise in player sales, and whilst optimistic, there are indications that we intend to spend big this time. Chelsea have also inflated the market somewhat, so I think that could well reflect in transfer fees this summer.

The names incoming involve a lot of guesswork, but I'm actually quite confident about all of the departures with the possible exception of Phillips who I rate at 50-50.

Gvardiol, Bellingham, Kvara for the lineup

Pad the rest with frees or listed etc. kovacic, aoaur, guerriro, maatsen, banseniani, Hudson-Odoi (if Foden is becoming an 8)

Silva, Laporte, Gomez, Palmer I expect gone on loans/obligations etc

We would probaly get Bellingham but probably not Gvardiol or Kvara. I don't knoq who we have got lined up after Bellingham
