However, the diesel generators kicked in and the pumps started up to cool the reactor.
Then the tsunami hit and knocked out the generators.

Surely. Surely. Surely. Someone must have thought that this scenario may happen, and there wasn't just the diesel generators as the only backup?!

This is the thing that's surprised me most. I find it hard to believe there's only one set of back-up generators.

I don't hate them, but feck me the stupid ones are so ill informed, it's a real joke! Fine, Pearl Harbour happened, but that was in a time of war and Japan have been punished ten fold, since then.

I don't have Facefook, but if I did, I'd reply to many of those fooking clowns.

Would be like us hating Germans forever because of the war. They live in their own bubble and thing everyone else should just die. Thats an idea might chat to a few now for a laugh.

I think it's unfair to generalise the USA's viewpoint based on a few less intelligent members of their society. Every country has them. I have a lot of American friends at university who have no ill-feelings towards Japan and are just as horrified by goings on as the rest of us.

The problem is, that time and time again, the USA is let down by the same minority of super-patriotic neanderthals. They don't represent the nation but many of them have a platform to air their views which is picked up on by the rest of the world.

Just heard a nuclear consultant on BBC News explaining what happened at the power plant.

The safety systems felt the earthquake and shut the reactors down straight away.
However, this was replicated at all the power plants in Japan, so the national grid suddenly collapsed as the power supply was severly interupted.
The nuclear power plants, ironically, thus had a power cut and the pumps that send water around the reactor failed.
However, the diesel generators kicked in and the pumps started up to cool the reactor.
Then the tsunami hit and knocked out the generators.

The Nuclear power plant doesnt have a power cut it automatically shuts down during an earth quake to protect itself the diesel geneartors are supposed to kick in and pump the cooling fluid. This ironically is to the letter of the law according to the world nuclear law

-- Sat Mar 12, 2011 5:03 pm --
