ULEZ Letter

As will pay per mile. The govt will have to maintain the roads without the revenue from the pumps once we are all driving our electric cars - magically powered by electricity not made from burning fossil fuels and releasing co2.
It'll be shoved on the price of electricity so that whoever fills up on the street will cop for it, and anyone with electricity in their house, whether they have an electric car or not, will have a surcharge added to the bill, like the 'standing' charge' that's familiar.

How many people driving 18+ year old cars do you think are not eligible for any of these?

  • Universal Credit
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Constant Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Pension Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • War Pensions Mobility Supplement
  • Working Tax Credit

I don't think you actually have to buy a brand new car to get the scrappage grant - it's certainly not mentioned anywhere on the TFL website.

On the one hand I have people saying "You're just screwing over the poorest 2%" and then on the other "You have to be on benefits to get help". The poorest 2% are on benefits. What a surprise, the people who came up with this scheme actually spent more than 5 minutes thinking about it.
Worth bearing in mind that 'poor' in the new ulez zone could easily be a household earning 50-100k with a mortgage and kids.

It’s a fuss about nothing that the Tory party have hypocritically latched on to because they think it might get them some votes. There will be scaremongering about a nationwide ULEZ in the run up to the next election because they think it’s a vote winner.
I think this has been an issue for Londoners for a few years. Not based upon the mayors political allegiance but on his determination to rail road this through when many are still picking up the financial pieces from the pandemic. It's just been thrust into the limelight as a party political issue by the by-election last week. There probably should be nationwide ulez really unless we think other towns and cities have magical properties.

Because someone quoted £5k for diesel in a previous thread... So must be true. I will get nothing for my 2004 petrol car.
Unless it's a real monster it's probably compliant. Take the dates with a pinch of salt - most petrol cars are ok, it's diesels that are the issue, and all to do with the type of engine / emission level. You might find a diesel 2009 reg that's fine and a 2014 reg that isn't.

I would be pretty surprised if anyone earning 100k/year has a 2005 petrol car.

2014/15 diesel? Possibly but few and they can afford to replace it.

We’re talking about a tiny minority of a tiny minority and someone’s always going to be on the wrong side of qualifying for grants.

If they’ve got a 13/14 diesel, they might well be paying 0 road tax currently. I’ve got a 2013 Golf and a 2016 Discovery Sport. I don’t pay any road tax for the golf and a lot for the discovery sport. The discovery sport is exempt from Ulez but the golf isn’t.
