but you have to be on benefits to get the £2k and that’s on a new car not a second hand one, so if you are on them I guess getting into debt to afford the rest of the car may be a problem. Also many commute into London so if you don’t live in those boroughs you don’t qualify.Or instead of becoming out of work alcoholics, they could do something like....
Scrap their old car, get £2k from the government, use that money to put a deposit down on a second hand hire purchase.
If you go on autotrader right now, with a £2k deposit you could get a hatchback from 2010-2013 - so lots of leeway on future emissions standards - for about £30 a month.
Oh look, it turns out it wasn't a completely insurmountable problem!
