ULEZ Letter

Because the number of very polluting cars entering London has dropped from 35,000 a day to 12,000 a day over the decade since it's come in, the amount of NOx pollution in the City has nearly halved, and we want to do everything we can to get non-compliant cars off the roads ASAP because they put out about 4x as many pollutants as a modern (ie post-2006) car.

The taxpayer shells out £3.7Bn a year for treatment of pollution related illnesses to Londoners every year.

Before this latest expansion, over 75% of residents were in favour. Expanding it is always controversial, but when the 98% of drivers who are unaffected realise they're unaffected and it makes them less like to die from cancer, they'll support it again.
But what about the 2% who will be amongst the poorest who gave to pay the extra £4k a year, the man in a van who will have to pay £30k plus fir a new van, you know the new VW electric van is sitting in forecourts because they are absolutely shit getting real world mileage of around 40 miles on a full charge, go on auto trader they are giving them away. I’m all for cleaning stuff up but the infrastructure isn’t there to support it, the expansion in London goes out of his remit where they don’t have the transport system of inner London. Still I suppose HS2 everyone can live in Birmingham and commute!

You're right about the blood pressure, jeez. If you were anymore highly strung Sandie Shaw would be singing about you:-)

I'm like a tripwire in fairness. Going to stay out of the politics forum in future! Thought this was a slam dunk to rant about safely but seems the only 5 people who think this is a good idea reside in this thread!

Not good at arguing online, generally have called everyone involved a **** and sent my address to people challenging them to a bare knuckle within 5 minutes.

They don't have to buy a new car or van. They have to buy one less than 20 years old. And the government will give them money to help.

Please tell me exactly what infrastructure is not in place for us to replace petrol and diesel vehicles with slightly less old petrol and diesel cars?

As for transport in outer London - Uxbrudge has a fucking tube station.

Honestly I don't understand how you can have this list of objectively wrong arguments unless you've simply been hit by a wave of propaganda from the right wing papers, because none of these arguments stand up to a seconds scrutiny.

I’m in Oldham, I have a 2011 diesel you know the cars that everyone was encouraged to buy by Gordon Brown! I did drive it to the FA cup final so that’s possibly why I did get a letter, as for the loophole if thousands did it to Khan imagine that coming through everyday to his office that would be worth watching, illegal or not. The guy gifted his car to Khan so he technically is the owner, same as I own my car but it’s my wife insures it, any speeding tickets etc come to me, same would happen with Khan.

so its not like you drive in London daily - as far as I am aware they have conducted a pilot since I think October last year to id non-compliant cars driven in London hence you must have been picked up.

The rest is just absolute nonsense I am afraid - get your vehicle V5 out and it says below your name and address - that is just the name of the keeper NOT the owner which it says in big letters below that the V5 is not proof of ownership it just identifies who is responsible for taxing and registering the vehicle. They will just do what a supermarket does when you overstay in a car park etc - contact the DVLA get his details and forward it on to him. As was stated elsewhere he may well be committing a fraud offence by doing what he has done because Mayor Khan is not responsible for taxing or registering his car

So how far do you think £120 million will stretch then? It’s not just about the tube if you have to go to the supermarket with your car that’s £12.50, it’s not all about the commute it’s about getting around in general. Have you seen the price of second hand cars and those will increase as soon as this comes in as people will need them. If it’s only 2% that will disappear over time anyway or is it about the cash? It’s estimated they will bring in over £300 million in fines alone as people who don’t know about or refuse to pay in a year, where is that cash going?

If governments gave one shit about older polluting vehicles they would take them off the roads and not allow the motorist to pay road tax on them and pay for MOT’s on them and to pay for fuel tax on them which funnily enough used to be enough to allow you to drive on our roads without further costs.

They won’t though will they?

Nice little earners and this is yet another tax on top.

as this was being brought up on here when I went out earlier I looked out for petrols pre-2006. Some older cars I counted out as you could see HDI or TDI badges on the rear so they were caught anyway but honestly I must have seen up to 1000 cars that I drove past that were parked ( or in the case of the **** in the 04 Peugeot 206 pulled out in front of me ) and I only saw half a dozen that I could positively say were petrol engined passenger cars and were of pre-2006 model

The new zone is estimated to bring in £96m a year which is the equivalent of 20,000 vehicles. Which is 0.7% of the cars in London.

TFL has annual revunues of nearly £10Bn and spends 90% of that every year on maintaining the public transport system and roads. You can look up where and what it spends its money on pretty easily if you care.

That’s why we have an MOT isn’t it? Just put the emissions up automatically fail can’t go on the road, but they know people will carry on driving them because they can’t afford not to

It’s a fuss about nothing that the Tory party have hypocritically latched on to because they think it might get them some votes. There will be scaremongering about a nationwide ULEZ in the run up to the next election because they think it’s a vote winner.
