United (N) | FA Cup Final | Post-Match Thread

Talking with my sons yesterday morning we agreed that on paper City were by far the better team, that on the pitch we were by far the better team, that we had the better players and that none of theirs would get into our team and that over 38 games they had done well only to trail by 14 points. My only concern was that the cup final was a one off over 90 minutes and that moments can change games. My fear was a hit hard and hope harder shot, a careless mistake, an injury or one or more awful decisions by the ref which undid all our good football. Well, the ref certainly did his bit to stick to the redtop script and he was ably seconded by VAR. What they couldn't do though, was disturb City's play. Jack was clearly upset but the team soon re-established control and always looked the only winners. What a great day.

I'd been dreading this for fucking weeks and, in all honesty, my mind was on another planet as soon as I woke up this morning. I was dawdling around Manchester doing some shopping, went and got brunch, walking about chatting with my lovely fiancée, trying to keep my mind off it. But my brain was not present at all. The idea of playing United in a cup final has been my worst nightmare for fucking years, but with a treble on the line... fucking hell. When Gundogan scored I celebrated but immediately thought "Shit, we've scored too early". And when United got that penalty I could only see it going one way. Goodness knows how the boys got back in front but thank god it's their job and not mine.

My heart was in my arse and mouth simultaneously. When United decided to play a bit of crossbar pinball I absolutely lost it. Nearly fell off the sofa shouting "No! No! No!" I'm normally way more relaxed about City conceding goals. It's never a nice feeling but it normally stings internally and I say something like "Well that's been coming". But honestly, I was so rattled by everything in this game that I was begging for it to finish. That last 10 mins, when United had Garnacho on Walker and then Akanji had to fill in, aged me by five years I'm sure.

No idea how to analyse the game. Couldn't even tell you if we played well. When the final whistle went I just sat there in stunned silence, head in my hands. I was honestly developing nervous tics during the game. I couldn't keep my hands off my head, just pulling at my hair. Biting my lips as well. I don't even hate United, but the idea of them being the team to stop the treble was all too fucking real and it got too bloody close for comfort. I'll be honest, I enjoyed about 2% of the game and it was the moments when Gundogan's goals hit the net.

My worst nightmare had a happy ending, though. And now onto next week. Sick bags at the ready.

I feel your pain & fully understand why you tried to avoid all talk of the game until 3pm. I did EXACTLY the same! :-)

HOWEVER, I rushed in dead on 3pm & turned the telly on & it was already on BBC1 when I saw KDB going up for a header & Gundog hitting the volley!

I started to check if this was a replay from a previous match, or if I'd got the timing wrong & missed the first half!

Luckily I composed myself & realised Gundog had only gone & scored the fastest goal in FA Cup final history! :-)

As for the penalty, it was unfair as there's fuck all Jack could've done to get out of the way of the headed ball. This latest handball rule is far from ideal, but I prefer the certainty of it above the interpretation being left to referees.

This call went against us, so we call the decision wrong, with some going as far as it being a PGMOL CONspiracy against us. BUT if the incident happened at the other end & the ref waved it away, we'd all be fuckin livid claiming 'Rules is rules' if we're willing to be honest. \0/

All's well that ends well. We beat ManUre in a major cup final, which formed ⅔ of our Treble bid. Roll on Instabul... )(

Don't be daft... They checked the Casimero tackle and gave them a free kick instead of a Red card...

VAR is a tool to keep the red teams relevent and keep the morons on side. It will never be fairly applied.

Its corruption in plain sight...

Its worth remembering when we feel like our lads weren't quite on it like yesterday. Our players know its corrupt but we still win. Tremendous fortitude to keep winning under this pressure from all side.

I could be wrong but due to the fact that the ref had already (wrongly) given the free kick to utd does this mean that VAR cant change his decision? The VAR/Ref power dynamic shifts with the area/incident that is being looked at....

Casemiro should have gone for that foul - it was a clear red BUT can VAR get involved in that as the ref had already made the decision?

The problem is of course that that decision would never be given in our favour.
Just look back this season, The Rags got a helping hand at Old Toilet and the same yesterday.

Here's an example thats been sort of lost in all the other stuff but would have settled it and avoided the stress at the end... The clear penalty against them when Kev was clearly fouled by Fred... absolutely clear as day. Even the commentators said the same. Big review by VAR? Nope, not a chance. No replay for the viewers but a cusrory look by VAR and its nope... nothing to see here...

Its bent, there's no question about it.
