who gives a flying fuck - at the end of the day ask yourself this. With our current squad, and if gollum was in charge do you think he could motivate them and tactically be aware enough in order for us to challenge and win silverware ?

My answer would be no

It was inevitable that manaure were going to start having to throw money at the squad, they cannot let their grip on routinely qualifying for the champions league slip away

If they end up sneaking 4th place the liverpool and then others should hold their heads in shame - but I guess that will come down to a lack of depth in their squads

In the summer I recall a lot of them saying/posting "Negredo's overrated, Navas is homesick, Jovetic's always injured, Fernandinho's overpriced." They perhaps got one right. It's just as easy to dismiss other team's signings with a wave of a hand and a singular phrase as it is to fret that one will change the game entirely ala RVP and, to a lesser extent, Ozil.

This is a puzzle piece, and an important one, but there are still pieces missing. They need a holding mid. They need quality replacements for Vidic, Wio and Evra. Depending on whether Fellaini is healthy and/or not actually just a windmill of elbows, they need a box-to-box guy too. Mata brings distribution, an attack channel down the center and an ability to transition the ball from the back to attack. But he's a liability defensively -- 91st of 111 MFs in defense who played at least 20 PL matches last year according to sqawka.com, if you take stock in how they put statistics together.

And I suspect Mata's inclusion requires a tactical revamp by Moyes, unless he's going to let his players choose formation like he did their penalty-taking order.

Bottom line: this gives them a modestly better chance of top 4, but that's all. If they get a few more holes filled this window, those chances could increase. It's the summer where the defensive clear out will no doubt occur. As constructed without new additions in the short-run, they'll try to get in shoot-outs with everyone and hope the back line holds while they put as many attacks together as possible. I'll take us in a shoot-out with them every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

What annoys the f**k out of me still (and probably will forever) is we were sooooooo close to the demise of Utd but that silly prick just had to help them out didn't he. Summed it up that other day when he said he hoped utd get top 4 ahead of the other 3 teams. All the Chelsea fans I know hate Utd but their manager seems to love them.

Said it earlier but I think they just make the 4th place for three reasons : Mata will get them some extra points they wouldnt get with Young/Nani/Kagawa, Mata's signing will certainly give them some energy/push/fresh ideas maybe like Ozil at Arsenal, while Spurs/Pool simply will crumble sooner or later they lose Suarez maybe ad its over for them, while Spurs still have EL to play.

Next 3 rounds is also crucial, if RVP/Rooney is back from injury and Mata starts to play, its hard to imagine they wont get around 9 points from Cardiff, Stoke, Fulham games.
And while they have these easier games their top four rivals will have: Pool-Everton derby, Spurs-City, Spurs-Everton, Liverpool-Arsenal, I mean their rivals will drop points probably left and right...
For me it seems a huge chance for them the close the current 6 point gap.

Pool made a mistkae not getting anyone in January giving them something extra, they wanted Salah from Basel was close to him then he ended up at Chelsea, now if their is no plan B for them, that's like ohh we can do it even without Salah that will comeback to bite them. Also Gerrard playing way too deep is another bad idea from Rodgers, would like if they could keep their 6 points lead but cat see it.
While I trust Spurs even less, I just dont rate Sherwood but he is pretty unknow as a manager vould surprise everybody but they really dont have a well gelled team.

But if United even drops just another 4-5 points from these Cardiff, Stoke, Fulham games coming up they will then find it extremely hard because their rivals now will drop points vs each other, its a big chance for Moyes. Would be piss funny to see him struggle vs ex-United guys like Solskjaer, Hughes, and even at Fulham Meulensteen he fired the summer.
:D
