Just realised if Hull can manage to stay up, United will be 10 points behind us.

250 mil transfer kitty for world stars goes a long way eh? ;-)

Also, they've had no European tournament this year, will their squad hold up with midweek games !?!?

Just a friendly reminder in the midst of all the revisionist history about making it back to the CL being "the goal" that the rags in fact DID NOT accomplish what their own financial projections are based upon.

Supposing they fail in the CL qualifier -- that ought to have a nasty dent financially. There's a lot of pressure on them that match, and it'll be after the Prem season has already kicked off.

From the Telegraph in September:

Manchester United budget for top-three but forecast 10 per cent fall in profits after failing to qualify for Europe

Manchester United have told Louis van Gaal that they expect a top-three Premier League finish this season after forecasting an unprecedented 10 per cent fall in revenues following their failure to qualify for Europe under David Moyes.

Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, on Wednesday also tempered any expectation of a continued spending spree this season after more than £150  million was paid to sign Luke Shaw, Radamel Falcao, Ángel di María, Danny Blind, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo.

“We don’t intend to significantly increase cap-ex in January,” Woodward said. “The usual three in, three out is par for the course in the numbers in and out each year, typically in the summer. I wouldn’t have expectations for January but, if there is a willingness from the manager, we will engage with him. If there is an opportunity, we will try and take that as we did last year with Juan Mata.”

Woodward was speaking following the publication of United’s accounts for 2013-14, a period which coincided with what was a desperate season under the management of Moyes.

In what will be a sharp dip in United’s usually relentlessly increasing income, the club have forecast their revenues for this financial year (2014-15) as between between £385 million and £395 million. This would represent a fall of up to £48 million and, perhaps optimistically, is based on securing automatic Champions League football. “Our [forecast] budgets assume a third-placed finish, as is ordinarily the case,” Woodward said.

For the 2013-14 period, the success of the commercial team underpinned record revenues of £433.2 million despite the on-field turmoil. That growth helped United to further stretch their wage bill to £214.8 million, although a small “single-digit” drop is forecast this year as the club plan for the accompanying fall in revenues. After Manchester City, United are only the second English club to spend more than £200 million a year on salaries.

“We expect total wages to be down [in 2014-15], due to the sale, retirement of players and no uplifts due to not playing in the Champions League,” Woodward said.

The accounts also revealed that about £5 million was spent to pay off Moyes and his coaching staff. Moyes himself received one year of his salary (£3.5  million) on top of the £3.5 million he was paid for overseeing what was United’s worst Premier League season. The biggest cost to the club, however, will be evident in the next accounts – which reflect this season – when the loss of Champions League football (usually at least £35 million) must be absorbed. Those accounts will also take in most of the summer spending, including deals for Shaw, Rojo, Blind, Di María and Falcao.

Servicing interest on the deeply controversial debt structure under the Glazer family’s ownership of United continues to impact on the club’s accounts, even if net finance costs fell from £43.4 million to £27.4 millionin 2013-14. There has also been an accompanying fall in United’s gross debt, which is now £341.8 million compared to £389.2 million.

In United’s favour is still their vast commercial power. Revenues in this sector increased by 24.1 per cent in 2013-14 to £189.3 million and represent 43.7 per cent of the club’s income. The new £53 million-a-year shirt sponsorship deal with Chevrolet has taken effect this season and next year will see the start of a record £750 million kit deal with Adidas. United’s overall financial power, then, remains the envy of any club in Britain even if they could be even further ahead with better football on-field last season and a different ownership model.

Woodward is also adamant that United have opened a “a new chapter” in their history and says that Van Gaal has “already begun to reinvigorate the club”. The season has started with two draws and two defeats.

“The 2013-14 season was a very challenging and disappointing one but, under Louis, there is a real feeling at the training ground that we are at the start of something special,” Woodward said.

When did football club's end of year parties become newsworthy?

Sty has to keep the rag masses watching so it can keep its advertisers happy and continuing to pump money into Dear Mr Murdoch's evil empire.

If they miss out in the CL qualifying game, wouldn't it mean that the Adidas deal could be hit? Is it two successive years non-CL 2014/15 and 2015/16 or would it need to be 2016/17 as well?

Premier league starts very early next year due to Euro 2016 (2 weeks early I think), The rags season will start early July probably, wonder if finishing 4th fucks up their tours
Probably not as their season won't start in early July.
PL season starts 8th August.
The PL 4th place team goes straight to the CL play-off round and the dates are 18th/19th August and 25th/26th August.
Where it might screw them over is if potential signings won't join unless the CL can be guaranteed. They won't know if they're in the group stages until less than a week before the transfer window closes.
If they have to sell before they buy then they might have to play 2 or 3 PL games, and possibly the play-off games with a weaker squad than they'd like.

It will be funny if they fail to qualify and end up in the Europa
