US Politics Thread

Dax,

You do that infuriating thing where you sprinkle your shit with just enough sugar that it’s hard to separate the two, or discuss the shit or the sugar without serious effort.

You clearly know your stuff, but then you run off, well beyond the facts, into Trumpdom’s talking points.

I guess I’m just going to have to start every response with “Yes, but…” for the next 4 years! :-)

A few things we know:

He’s the consummate narcissist.

He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know, which is too much and far more than anyone else who has ever held the office.

He has little to no interest in domestic politics and policies, except where they intersect with his own personal financial interests.

He is very interested in being the big swinging dick on the international stage, because he believes the title POTUS MAKES HIM the big swinging dick in world affairs and he is going to swing away, regardless of the long term geopolitical damage he might cause. Those headlines will be written long after he’s gone and he’s all about appearances NOW!

He thinks he’s the smartest person in every room he enters, when the reverse is often true, especially out in the world, away from the ring kissers.

Speaking of ring kissers, that is required of anyone who wants anything from him. The Cabinet picks illustrate this in spades.

As the head of a crime family involved in a large scale criminal enterprise, the POTUS title has saved him (and his friends and associates) from prosecution, which was another prime motivator to seek a second term.

Lastly, I have no idea what anyone with a brain sees in him. He is a lying, low IQ, grifter who learned his trade (using the tax system to enrich himself at the expense of others) from a corrupt father and has taught it to his children. At this point, they produce nothing other than licensing deals to trade on the name, much like “Mr Wonderful” on Shark Tank, another nasty little fucker who leverages the little people to keep the money train moving down the tracks.

I’m glad to hear him taking credit for the new booming economy, record stock market, US oil & gas drilling leading the world, and telling everyone that he wants credit for everything positive since Nov 5th, even though it was all painstakingly built before he changed his diaper to play dress up.

In many ways, that date is ironic, because America, much like England back in the day, watched a guy of foreign descent try to blow up Government! The big difference, of course, is that Donald Drumpf looks to be succeeding where Guido failed!
I like your sugar and shit analogy. But you have to know it applies to you too, right?

1. I agree he is the consummate narcissist. Hence why I believe his real goal is legacy and adulation. Not a couple more dollars to pass the millions.

2. Has no interest in the nitty gritty of domestic policy is true. I said as much. But the overarching broad brushes are in line with his position - Drill, Tax Cut, negotiate better relationships with foreign countries. Those are his 3 domestic agendas. But the actual guys who'd carry out the specifics are the folks like Russ Vought at OMB, Lutnik and Bessent at Commerce and Treasury, Burgum, Gor, Greer and other folksile that.

Most of these guys are super smart and have great ideas on how to achieve the overall goal. So in going to have to.bef to differ that the only people on his team are ring kissers. They are no more ring kissers, than anyone on Obama or Clinton's team during their Presidency.

In the end, everyone serves at the pleasure of the President.

Finally, I think you, and too many smart folks, have for too long underestimated him and his intelligence. He is not a book smart, brain cells firing off the Einstein type figure. But he has fucking great instincts...

At this point, it's just not luck. He has something that's hard to quantify, but he does. He keeps doing things everyone promises no one can do and survive, and yet keeps coming out tops. At some point you just have to recognize it as something. Call it dumb luck, but there is something there.

And yes, I am granting a lot of what you say about him personally being, true. Yet, there is something there.

If he's still alive he'll try and pull that stunt the joker in South Korea tried. However, there's no one left to push back and hold hi accountable like the Koreans had so it'll probably work
Id bet good money you are wrong. If my understanding of what drives him is correct. And I absolutely think it is... Trying for a 3rd term would be antithetical to his goals.

I probably am but it wont have gone unnoticed by him. He'll float it at some point

It's not enough not to be supportive, you have to actively join in the blind hatred or you will be under suspicion. Very like the rainbow laces thing I suppose
Man, I just don't understand it at all.

In the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, the Two Minutes Hate is the daily period during which members of the Outer and Inner Party of Oceania must watch a film depicting Emmanuel Goldstein, the principal enemy of the state, and his followers, the Brotherhood, and loudly voice their hatred for the enemy and then their love for Big Brother.

The Two Minutes Hate is a daily ritual practiced in George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984. It is a period of intense hatred and contempt directed towards the Party’s enemy, Emmanuel Goldstein, and his teachings.

It's just bizarre. I mean other people attack his cabinet picks, his bullying, his incessant lying, his crazy tariff plans, his record of fraud, his grossly immoral behavior, his hypocrisy, his threats, his ignorance, his selfishness and I have myself. I posted once a whole long list of all his faults. What's the point of keep saying it when to my mind the elephant in the room this entire time is

HE TRIED TO SUBVERT THE CONSTITUTION. What more need be said?

Then we have him taking classified documents and conspiracy to obstruct.

Trump and Trump supporter excuses:

He was just bringing work home from the office.
The FBI planted the documents
Everyone is corrupt except Trump.
The government were not polite enough when they asked for them back.
It's just like checking out library books for too long. No need for a subpoena!
What about Obama?
If it's not nuclear secrets it's not that important. (It was some nuclear secrets)
He declassified the documents by thinking about it.
What about Hilary?
It was chaotic around January 6th. Mistakes happen.
The documents should never have been classified in the first place.
The General Services Administration just stashed them in boxes.

Biden Team Considers Blanket Pardons Before Donald Trump’s Promised ‘Retribution’

Some members of President Biden’s staff have suggested protecting a list of current and former government officials from potential criminal charges.

-/-/-/-/-

And heads explode! HAHA!!!
What I don't understand about this (and yes, I realise that weaponising the law now seems to be a perk for the govt nowadays) is why biden would have to consider so many blanket pardons for current govt officials if they are not a bunch of criminals?

Wait. What extreme leftist views are folks hand waving away? And what Democratoc politicians in positions of power and influence are proffering such radical views? I’m especially interested in economic ones.
This is what I mean by hand waving. The Economic views aren't that much at issue. One could debate whether or not the economy is recovering fast enough for the average man or whether the inflationary effects of the last 4 years, especially the first 2 before things calmed down a bit, can be blamed on the current administration in power and their future candidates or not.

Those would be interesting debates. But we know from history how the effects of the economy weigh on voting in the next election.

When things have been bad economically, whichever party is in office almost always loses. That's just that.

But it's often not the economic issues that animates anti leftists. It's the cultural and hypocritical ones.

For Examples:
DEI is in essence just racism with lipstick. And our federal government adopted these policies across the board hook, line and sinker under the present administration.

Trans-ideology is another area that's fraught with problems but that gets hand waved off. No matter what consequences are suffered, it is disregarded as some right wing hate of people who are not like them. As if that was the issue.

We put an intelligent jurist on the Supreme Court who was too scared to define what a woman was at her confirmation. We have a guy ( claiming transgender rights) raping and impregnating 3 women at the NJ Prison and everyone pretends the story is unimportant or unrepresentative. Or is such a minority that we should ignore it all. And with all these stories, the media coverage is just so purposely insanely faulty.

We have Sanctuary Cities with catch and release laws that make criminals go free and re-commit crimes. Defund the Police and it's effects. Etc

I mean for crying out loud, you and yours had to go vote to re-criminalize shoplifting in your State. I mean, it wasn't some right of center Nutjob Legislature or DA's office that decided to let criminals run roughshod over the citizens in your State, was it?

I also don’t think it’s fair to say venom is saved for “anyone” right of center, and that’s a generalized distinction that doesn’t work well anyhow. You already called Trump an “extreme reformer” so we know that at least on one level Trump holds polarized views in your own mind — on issues of reform he’s an extremist. As a pragmatic centrist I object to extremism generally.
2 points - I concede I was generalizing, but the point I was making is that at least until November 6th, the general tenor on these threads ( and I mean all of them) was compliance or be attacked.

I used 'right of center" loosely to mean anyone who didn't march lock and step with everything anti-Trump. Most of those weren't even on the right.

Ask @Mazzarelli's Swiss Cheese who is clearly on the left, he got attacked for daring to say ' well, that's hypocritical." There was another poster who clearly hated Trump and said so often. But made the unacceptable mistake of saying He/she listened to Harris and found her unimpressive. That person too got bombarded as a Trumpist.

Finally, I know it will forever fall on deaf ears here, since I have committed the unforgivable sin of actually voting for Trump- but I have said this often over the years, that I don't like the guy.

I agree he is a narcissist, and bombastic to say the list. Funny enough, he reminds me of @SWP's back. Crass, and over the top abusive. I used to laugh at SWP, coz he is what Trump would have been, if he was left leaning.

Any, for what it's worth, I have my issues with Trump. But I wholeheartedly preferred him to anything Harris waS offering.

That’s more like it. You’re getting the hang of this.

See the post above. You didn’t give us anything. We took it!!

That mural I saw represents an opinion on the US Territory of Puerto Rico. As I was saying, if they really want independence they should have it with some conditions.
They would prefer to be a US State, I think.

What do you regard as ‘left’ in America?
What I saw of the Dems in the last 4 years, or ever for that matter wouldn’t qualify as ‘Left’ over here.
The left is a fragmented side. No different from the right in that respect.

Amongst the left are those who are economic lefties.

Workers rights, perhaps even a bit anti-capitalist. Love Regulations on Business and heavy taxes on the rich. 'Rich' being defined as anyone richer than themselves. No matter how rich they are. This is the "Rich should Pay their fair share" folks.

The there is the identitarian Left. Which is more animated and interestes in things like DEI, Critical Race Theory, Reparations for Minorities, Unabridged Affirmative Action. Race and Sex based preferences based on ever changing principles and ideas.

And their Cousin group: The Sexuality Left. This too is identitarian, but a newer brand. Mostly focused on sexuality. Be that Orientation or Self identification.

Those 3 form what is call the left ideologically on the U.S.

Hey if they want out, I am all for it. However, they were at a party where they had a part in running up a tab so they gotta pay their share.

Funny enough though, it seems the majority doesn’t want that. They prefer statehood, which isn’t going to happen.

If Scotland were to leave, wouldn’t they have to take on some of the UKs debt?? It’s only fair, isn’t it?
Well, they couldn’t take on their actual share of accumulated debt. It is so large it would sink them.
