I'm not sure we'd have won 15/16. We weren't a very good team that year. Some of our players were past. And we were Generally disjointed.I think we'd have picked up at least 1 of the 14/15 and 15/16 league titles.
You look at 15/16 and we lost the league that season because of that derby loss (Demichelis mugged by Rashford), and the Leicester loss, if we'd had a fit Kompany for those games we'd have been ahead of Leicester with 7 games or so to play, instead of being 10 points behind.
And in 14/15 he got injured at Christmas and we dropped some stupid points, so we were only level with Chelsea at New Years, then when he did come back he was not good for the first few weeks and we shipped some very costly goals which effectively ended it.
I love Vinny but Pep leaning on him for these big games doesn’t appear to be working. He played in the 3-0 at Anfield, the 3-2 defeat to the Rags and in the team that shipped 3 last night. Great individual defender but that back four had barely played with each other before last night. Not blaming Vinny for the performance, just questioning whether disrupting our defence to accommodate him for big games is a sound strategy.
One of the 3 wrong decisions by Pep in my opinion. Not starting Gundogan at DM, not Starting Sane, and starting Kompany. He rectified 2 midgame luckily and we got away with a victory.I never like writing something negative about Vinny of all people, but my god he was a liability in that first half. I was waiting for him to get a second booking all game, and the passing was like going back to Pep's first preseason in 2016. He could quite easily have cost us that game.
My issue isn't actually with him, he's 33, he's on his way out, testimonial in the summer, his role is supposed to be 4th choice CB who's main contribution is being a leader in the dressing room.
The problem is why is he seemingly our 2nd choice CB over John Stones, Pep's project player who the team was supposed to be built around, and Otamendi who is supposed to be the reliable veteran in his prime? Stones currently looks no closer to replacing Vinny than he did when he walked through the door 3 years ago.
If we'd lost the league because Kompany got sent off trying to bring down Rashford who he simply physically can't keep up with anymore, it would have been a massive disservice to Vinny.
Have to agree with you.He made me very nervous tonight
I agree, I know he made a few misplaced passes but overall thought he was decent again tonight. He defended very well, broke up play well, made some good blocks, won all his headers, organised the defence. Any centre back in the league would look slow against Rashford. He is definitely still in my first 11.Those nervous about VK must be shitting a brick watching Stones or Otamendi. VK is doing no worse in a football sense than either of them and brings leadership qualities that the other two can only dream of. I would have him in my side for the last three games, no bother.
4th choice - you having a laugh!?Where he's really good still is in those tight situations where teams start lumping the ball forward into the box. His pace has gone, but he still generally commands the defensive line against that kind of attack - and better than the ball playing defenders we have.
He's probably our fourth choice now. But that's a hell of a good fourth choice.
4th choice - you having a laugh!?
