overrated. Top 20 at best.

He can only play upfront, putting him anywhere else and he becomes invisible. He's like Caicedo with an overdose of confidence. There are far better players than him that came from the rags. I would put him On the 4th tier of attacking players.

Messi, Tranny, old Ronaldinho, Pele, etc.

Drogba, Fat Ronaldo, Maradona, Zola, etc

Giggs, Robben, Vialli, Tevez, Lineker, Bergkamp, etc

Rooney, Di Canio, Defoe, Weah, Wise, Viduka, etc.

I didn't really rate him, but tbh seeing him in the flesh against us over the past couple of years (especially in the carling cup semi last year) changed my opinion. He does have great awareness, and strength, much as it pains me to say it.

There was an anti-Rooney thread posted a month or two before the world cup, and anyone who dared to say a bad word about him was ganged up on by hordes of The Sun readers who believed he is twice the player Messi is.

What happened to them lot? Did they see him at the world cup, and begin to doubt The Sun as being the source of truth and all that is holy?

I can't stand the guy. I think he's a pig ignorant ugly pug of disgraceful disposition. However I will concede that at his very best he is a very good player, strong, fast, committed, good shot, good vision. When all this comes together he can be a handful but he is still over-rated. Just a little bit, bit over-rated nevertheless.

I was appalled with Capello's insistence on playing him up front in the WC despite his shocking form and clear lack of ability and fitness over there. I hope he never regains his form of last year (I think this may be a safe bet). Even at his very best last season he was just shy of being world class, but still very effective in Ushited's set-up.

His reaction to the fan's booing his approx. 50% effort at the world cup was double shabby and I hope he gets booed from now until the end of his England career (which with any luck will be measured in weeks from now rather than years). The rest of the team don't deserve to be booed tbf. They had a poor world cup and hung their heads in shame like they should've done after the Algeria game.

Overrated but still a class player on his day.....even through blue-tinted glasses. Having said that, I reckon he peaked far too soon especially with the media creaming their pants every time he scored. This season is massive for him IMO, especially after the disgrace of the world cup. Who knows maybe Bebe will outshine him this season :-p

He's a very good striker, with admirable qualities, like strength, determination, teamwork, vision, football intelligence, and the ability to pull something special out of the bag. However, I don't think there's a gulf between him, and other strikers, such as Tevez or Adebayor. I think Torres is a better striker than Rooney. For me Drogba is the best striker in the Premier League, but its unfair really to compare him with Rooney, as Drogba is alot older, and has hit his peak. Rooney may become as good (or better) than Drogba, in time. He does get overrated by the media though, because he's English, plays for United, and shows passion and commitment, the two qualities which English football drools over. I get really annoyed by how he gets viewed as the saviour of England, when he scored that penalty against West Ham, "The nation breathes a sigh of relief", or his "Golden Boy of English football" tag which Sven gave him. Today Capello was going on about how he intends to build the team around Rooney, telling the media what they wanted to hear, that the golden boy will get things his own way. What about the rest of the team? Are we going to play a bizarre formation, with people playing out of position just to appease the little prince? Rooney is viewed as a deity, by the English media. He didn't deserve his PFA award, that should have gone to Drogba.
