Wayne Rooney - how good or bad, bias aside?

decent player, good but not great. Although i do think that playing in this league and who he plays for and the fact that he has been marketed as the future of england helps him massively. Alot of people have alluded to his great power, he cant ghost past players a la ronaldo, messi etc he tends to just barge them over.

For a different team in a different league he wouldnt get away with that and it would negate his game. Also his petulance is just written off and laughed at as 'thats just what hes like' once again another team another league it doesnt wash

Rooney was substituted in the champions league final against Chelsea after a poor performance. In the final against Barcelona, he showed nothing. For England he had a shocker in the previous Euro Finals, and in the last World cup he failed miserabley. So there have been many occasions for him to really catapult his reputation where it matters but he has'nt. People may be quick to point out what he has won, fair enough, of course he is a good player, but for me he is definately no Alan Shearer.

The rooney that was playing prior to his injury last season would grace any premier league side.
Overrated?maybe slightly, the guy has all the attributes of a top player, think back to some of the goals he's scored for the rags, all different types headers, volleys, long range, tap ins etc and a lot of these were scored against champions league sides as well as the usual premier league fodder.
Rooney may be ugly, obnoxious and a rag but he's one of the best around when he's on form.

I'm with you on this one. He is not the only player at the Rags over the last 10 or 15 years to be totally overrated. However, an unbiased look at him and his performances shows that he is a good player, but not great.

Rooney would start in any team in the world, im trying to think of a team where he wouldn't walk in but cant find any. If that doesn't qualify you as "world class" then I dont know what the fuck does

He might not be as good as Messi or Tranny but he's world class nonetheless

Disclaimer: I'm neither a city nor a united fan

He would not start for Barca - no way over Villa - I think he is a quality player but not a mentally pressure player which I think defines World Class status. Players that do it at the defining moment. Rooney is not there as yet and I personally think he needs to leave the scums to find that part of his game. We should also remember that he is still learning as shown with his heading last season, but the reliance place on him for club and country will not allow to the mental pressure game .

shrek is a brilliant player, the one player id love to see at coms from the epl, that aside, hes not in cruyff, maradona, pele league, they are the best players ive ever seen

He'll need to consistently keep up his form from the earlier part of last season to be anything like world class. He's still never been the top scorer in this league and at the rags only became top scorer for them last season. If you look at the Premier League strike rates, Rooney's record doesn't stand out as being impressive. He's behind Darren Bent and I've never heard anyone mention Darren Bent and world class in the same sentence. You might well argue he's not been a striker for most of his time at the rags. Fair enough, but then you can't really assess him as a world class striker based on one season.

My definition of world class is as follows:

Would get into a 25 man squad comprised of the world's best players from any league in two consecutive or three non-consecutive seasons in that player's era.

I just think he is a future Gazza in the making who in years to come will turn up at an Armed Siege with a Cooked Chicken, Fishing Rod a Can of beer and a Dressing Gown, or is that Steven Ireland am thinking of?

Lol - both, except Ireland would turn up with a cooked pheasant, a Pimms and a smoking jacket.
