When did it change

I assumed we were talking about direct rivals/challengers. But as you asked; January 1979, a 1-1 draw in the land that time forgot (Kiddo with a late equaliser). The one time I got a couple of serious clatters when following City. I was 16 years old, and couldn't punch my way out of a paper bag. Still can't, actually. That's from a personal perspective. The general hatred probably started a couple of years earlier, when they tried to get the FA Cup game postponed, and tales emerging of fathers and young kids being attacked.

When United won treble in 99 i watched Champions league final with half a dozen red mates and when they won the cup i said "well done" and shook their hands. I've always hated United as a club but back then they were the best team, and being a football fan i cannot deny that. And several of my red mates have said how they enjoy watching us play, but they hate us winning cups they feel they should be winning. Their time will come again, it's how peaks and troughs work.

Rag

Champions League.

Before it was just the country’s best team representing the league in the European Cup. The cup winner in the CWC and one it two got at shot at UEFA.

When the G14 manipulated the format to make sure they qualified almost regardless then I lost it.

Though to be fair, i only ever wanted the likes of Norwich or Raith Rovers to do well. Never the big red clubs anyway.
the arrogance of the so called elite clubs n fans looking down on everyone

Was happy enough for the rags to beat Benfica, honestly. Was generally supportive of English clubs until the rise of the Ferguson rags. Then I switched off completely. So yeah, definitely nineties. My feeling ranged from being downright hostile (rags, Liverpool) to merely indifferent (Arsenal, Chelsea). But City had no stake whatsoever in it in those years, so that didn't help. Liverpool being 3-0 down against Milan was a good laugh. I had a grudging respect for them winning it from that position. Although with VAR these days there's no way Liverpool's winning that. Dudek's well off his line at least a couple of times.
Greatly relished last night's results. I don't think that any set of English fans is particularly benign towards any English club other than their own now, in Europe.

Think it was neutral before, where sometimes i hope a club did well for their fans. After the scum won their fanbase changed for the worse. Same with the other clubs, success brought cockiness.

Only wanted utd to fail really.

I still want most of the English teams to win. I hope City and Newcastle win tonight. I find united losing hilarious though.

I hope Newcastle win tonight, I’m angry with myself now but I remember being pleased for my mate when the dippers came back to win against Milan. If I knew what I do now and experienced the behaviour in last ten years then I wouldn’t have. When I really began to hate Liverpool was when they attacked our players bus. I’m always glad to see the rags suffer but the rest of the teams I don’t celebrate them losing.

I supported Benfica in 1968, as I could never want United to win anything. Generally wanted Liverpool to win (pre-Heysel) And happy for Forest and Villa etc. Became indifferent to “supporting” English Clubs in the 1990s onwards.

Didn’t help when you had gobshites from Nottingham Forest Chelsea and Villa , bringing blow up champions league , singing champions of Europe you’ll never sing that …

Well I can honestly say premier league champions you’ll NEVER sing that to both Villa and Forest ….

We should sing it to them , champions of Europe we’ll never sing that .
