Who can we actually class as world class players?

Rooney's miles ahead of Eto's and Drogba for me.

- Drogba has managed to out score Rooney
- Drogba took 1 penalty compared to the 5+ Rooney took
- Drogba has assisted nearly double the amount Rooney has
- Drogba has played less games than Rooney
- Drogba contributes far more defending set pieces
- Drogba contributes far more in terms of hold up play and relieving pressure from the defence
- Drogba contributes far more against the top teams

So how exactly is Rooney miles ahead?

You try too hard to be controversial.

Spot on!! Let's see how good he is tomorrow against a poor team

my question would be how well would both players do if they swapped teams for a season.

Rooney has been doing the business in a team that I think is far worse than the Chelsea team where Drogba has been doing his stuff

personally I think Rooney is ahead of Drogba but not by much

Rooney didn't do the business the season before when their team was the best in the PL though did he? I agree that there isn't much in it, and when Rooney is Drogba's age he'll be the better player. But right now Drogba is the better player for me.

I cannot on any level comprehend why Rooney would be "miles" ahead of Drogba though.

"World Class" is a vastly overused phrase probably by agents when trying to flog their clients! There are several excellent players but only a couple who stand above the rest. I think we may have one with Tevez after a very consistent season but taking off my blue specs I'd love to have Torres, Rooney, Messi, Iniesta, Maicon at Middle Eastlands!
Wonder if we'll get any of them?

I know were being linked with top players but who can we actually class as top players in their position?

I think at the minute we've only really got tevez and yaya and possibly Given.

I'll throw my tuppence in to this thread which I see has gotten some legs already, and say that it isn't so much the emphasis on 'world class players' as individuals, but the formation of a world class team that is far more important.

I doubt on this forum that I'd need to start naming names to illustrate my point, and neither do I expect people to champion the argument that just by buying 'big' names and individual players do you automatically achieve success.

I'd probably agree that a team is more important than the individuals in it.
We arguably had more star names than most other teams last season including Arsenal, Rags and Spuds but unfortunately we didn't put it together as a team on a more regular basis than them hence our last gasp failure to secure chumps league. Watching that Spuds game you just knew we weren't gonna win as we just lacked something!

Please don't sit in judgement on me "trying to be controversial"

There's nothing controversial about saying I would have Rooney before Drogba in my "world" squad.

I'd say majority opinion amongst football people would be the same.

World class players do it when the time is right.

Which is why we can honestly say we have nobody at our own club at present, although I believe Hart has the potential in a niche position.

Class is over a period of time, which is why, as much as I hate to admit it, both Scholes and Giggs were world class.

The last truly world class player in this country was Thierry Henry.

Cristiano Ronaldo never did it in World Cup and European Championship finals.

Not read most of the thread but i agree with the above...it's all about over a period of time, maybe not with our opinions but certainly amungst professionals. Charlton, Busby and Ramsey have been noted to wax lyrical about Stiles and his importance (and greatness) to a team (the sport we're on about) to the point where it is said he could read a game and interject into the oppositions play both on a world stage and amungst the finest europe had to offer with aplomb....was little nobby half blind stiles world class?...

Corrigan 4 years before the cessation of his career was world class.
