Your favourite county in England and Wales?

When I was about 16 I had a summer job checking addresses at a mail order place. At the time they were still using old Scottish county names rather than regions. The one that stuck in my mind was Kirkcudbrightshire. Haven't a clue where it is.

Raith Rovers. Aren't they from Kircudbrightshire? Still, doesn't tell WTF it is, though!

Extending the question to Scotland also, I would say Argyle and Bute, which includes the Isle of Mull. We holiday there every year, and would happily move there one day.

Is that Reddish, Stockport. Stockport was always Cheshire, so nope, it doesn't include Reddish!
[pedant mode on]Reddish along with the Heaton Wotsits are all north of the River Mersey/Tame which is most definitely Lancashire - the rest of Stockport is south of the river which is Cheshire[pedant mode off]

Cumbria by a million billion light years. Don't get me wrong - there's a lot of beauty all over England and Wales, but Cumbria contains the entirety of The Lake District plus a huge number of areas of outstanding natural beauty. Put bluntly, nowhere can compete with that.

OK I think we should be allowed a top 5. So mine in no particular order would be Gwynedd, Derbyshire, Cumbria, Devon, Dumfries-and-Galloway

Raith Rovers play in the town of Kirkaldy, Fife, the town is famous for it's linoleum factory, Nairns. My first wife was from the town, having visited on a few occasions it became clear to me why she was so miserable, it wasn't just being married to me, it was due to growing up in such a depressing town.
