Couldn't the players just protest and refuse to play?

I don't know the legality of it, but perhaps the clubs sue the players that do, that will probably last some time while the club plays with no players, damaging them much even more.

Furthermore, the players may potentially be able to counter-sue for the clubs changing the terms of their contracts (Not a lawyer, but playing one in this statement).

Don't know the ins-and-outs of this, but perhaps somebody with more knowledge can chime in.
