I understand but any delay is equally as fatal for the NHS waiting lists for other stuff and people's mental health.
Personally I think the scientists need to stop hogging the spotlight and we need to get on with our lives.
It’s got nothing to do with shortening NHS waiting lists, Matt. The NHS is trying to get back up to full capacity. Unless you are suggesting sharing wards between Covid and waiting list patients?

I read the other day of a NHS Trust Chief Exec stating that just a handful of Covid cases can mean 50 people not getting any treatment for non covid issues. That's very telling and only supports the argument to squash the virus as much as possible.

Can't take you seriously at all when you use phrases like 'project fear' to describe this. Ignoring the science got us in a mess to begin with and it's proven time and time again it's the thing that will get us out.

Why not?
Ian Duncan Smith said exactly the same thing today.
I'm not saying they shouldn't listen to the scientific advice, just pointing out that we are at a good stage now and need to just get on with it.
SAGE and the experts don't want to escape being in the news that's the issue.

Zero deaths today yet some people want to prolong the misery. Absolutely unbelievable really.
Personally I think the government will proceed for June 21st.
SAGE and the boffins cannot accept that project fear is coming to an end and its almost as if the scientists now cannot bring themselves to understand how exactly life will be.
Just get on with it please Boris.

Would have thought you'd read enough on here to understand - but anyhow, zero deaths is great news but the reality is infection rates are rising at a fast rate, it takes about 4 weeks from being infected for some to need hospital treatment and then die, so in a few weeks, it is likely deaths will increase - here's hoping treatments and the vaccine will keep it down but we're far from out the woods based on a holiday lag of zero deaths.

June 21st will go ahead in my opinion
People getting too obsessed with the negatives.

You didn’t put people awaiting operations alongside highly infectious Covid patients. That’s putting people at unnecessary risk and it would also worsen the waiting list situation as more operations would be cancelled.

Virtually everything is open. Maybe the last few restrictions will be eased on the 21st. If that’s delayed for a bit then so be it. We aren’t in any semblance of lockdown.

the NHS will need big money injection by the government to repair the damage covid-19 has done
more hospitals/doctors/nurses/staff/beds would be a good start. we will not get rid of covid-19 and i can see points in still having local lockdowns and tier systems. maybe having specials hospitals just for covid-19 patients so to keep them anyway from the others that need treatment for other things

i remember specials hospitals for bad viruses and TB and other stuff ? monsall hospital spring to mind because i use to go to moston brook high school and it was on the back of the play ground

it totally depends on hospital admissions, as always.

You can never have a situation of risking the collapse of the NHS
Thanks for reminding me. I posted the other key data from England hospitals a couple of hours back but forgot to add the admissions data over the long weekend,

THe numbers all stayed below 100 at 83 - 92 - 69 - 80.

The equivalent 7 days earlier were 98 - 85 - 75 - 77

Wk to wk overall that was slightly down.

The NW did have the most admissions but were not much different to a week earlier in the late teens to mid 20s.

All in all there is no real sign yet of hospital numbers in England escalating much given the thousands of cases of the new variant.

How strange. A few of us were talking about that exact same thing at weekend and mentioned Monsall Isolation Hospital. Hospitals that were set up to keep patients with infectious diseases separate. What a fab idea that would be!!

Good news

but i expect hospital admissions will rise considerably in a few weeks as that's when the scale of increasing infections come to the boil. hope i'm wrong of course and the vaccine has kept this at a minimal.

That's fantastic news on admissions staying stable at worst.

Every week on means the pool of the unvaccinated is smaller and younger and less likely to end up in hospital.

would make sense and leave the hospitals for normal things and A&E

If you was in the hospitality business, theatres, venues, restaurants, bars and pubs etc, then you wouldn't be saying that. So many are teetering on full collapse and closure. They bent over backwards to comply to all government restrictions and advice. They were the first to be closed and last to reopen, and under such restrictions they cannot sustain the loss of income much longer and still be viable.
Any extension to 'normality' and full opening will be too much for many...

I agree it’s tough times for many but you are way wide of the mark if you think we are in a lockdown. Pubs and restaurants are open and one thing holding many hospitality businesses back is staffing shortages.

The term lockdown meant prisoners not being able to leave their cells and it’s being high jacked by people claiming their civil liberties are being denied by table service rather than a crowded bar.

I hope the Country is in a position to end the last few restrictions but only if that’s the best thing to do, on balance:

Greater Manchester

Weekly total cases:-

Tameside 150, Oldham 162, Trafford 187, Rochdale 212, Bury 274, Stockport 275. Wigan 285, Salford 352. Manchester 750, Bolton 1077.

Bolton falls and Manchester catching it fast.

The others are rising too.

Stockport gone from lowest sub 50 score to closing in on 300 in just a couple of weeks. Salford is rising fast too.

GM Weekly Pop Data after today:~

Borough / Pop Today / 7 days ago / up or down wk to wk/ Testing is % of local population who have tested positive for Covid over past year.

As ever with Pop going up is bad, going down good - the higher the number the better or worse depending on direction moving. The Pop is total cases in past week versus 100,000 POPulation to even out the comparison versus size and expected cases based on numbers living there.

Bolton 375 / 432 / DOWN 57 Testing positive 10.5%

Bury 144 / 67 / UP 77 Testing positive 9.3%

Salford 136 / 43 / UP 93 Testing positive 9.2%

Manchester 136 / 71 / UP 65 Testing positive 9.9%

Rochdale 95 / 58 / UP 37 Testing positive 9.9 %

Stockport 94 / 25 / UP 69 Testing positive 7.3%

Wigan 86 / 54 / UP 32 Testing positive 9.1%

Trafford 78 / 52 / UP 26 Testing positive 7.2 %

Oldham 68 / 46 / UP 22 Testing positive 9.9%

Tameside 66 / 22 / UP 44 Testing positive 8.3

The only way is up - especially Salford. Bury, Stockport and Manchester today - all up over 60 week to week - as Bolton still falls.

Real chance more than half the burroughs will be above 100 tomorrow.

But as you can see nobody is looking like falling right now. Apart from Bolton.
