Frenkie de Jong

They certainly wanted him back in late November when they asked City to take him on loan when also brokering Torres.

At this stage, Barca are still having to portray they are relevant, even if it means taking big names like Aubameyang.

Sterling earns a similar amount to De Jong right now, in terms of the wages he agreed to defer during Covid.

For Barca, taking a reputational England player for effectively nothing, whilst also offloading De Jong's wages, is an open goal if presented.

Let's remember, they took Sergio on a free and he was essentially on his last legs.

Again, all because of his huge name and Barca trying to convince the wider football world they are still glamorous.

Barcelona have got the most battered fanny flaps in Europe but think buying a few Vagazzles off EBay will sort them out.

Did a bit of research on Barcelona and what their squad could be next season with incoming transfers and departures:

ter Stegen
Pena

Azpilicueta
Roberto

Araujo
Christensen
Pique
Garcia

Alba
LB

Busquets
Kessie

Gavi
Soler
Pedri
Nico Gonzalez

Sterling
Raphinha

Lewandowski
Aubameyang

Ansu
Ferran

Sterling fits in quite well and is a genuine possibility. On top of Barcelona’s desperation for big names to remain relevent, a De Jong/Sterling swap is a good deal for both parties.
Xavi and Barcelona seem to be interested in getting a lot of players with Premier League experience because it fits the style and intensity he’s after. Sterling is the epitome of that

Would be a brilliant outcome , hope it happens.

Same prob with Sterling for me. No one has the fee or can eat the wages in the market.

He'd be great as Gundogan's long-term replacement and could be the versatile midfielder we need it might be perfect, if Barca sign Kessie like has been pretty much the talk almost as if it's set in stone these past couple months then DeJong is probably on his bike. Franck Kessie usually gets further forward than FDJ but could sit deeper and Barca have Pedri or Gavi or Nico Gonzalez too that they'll prioritise over him, honestly can't see where they'd play Kessie as a definite starter so personally I think they want him as a Yaya Toure/Seydou Keita important utility type, just mainly cover all over he'd be nowt beyond valuable rotation player it could be a foolish move for Kessie, especially if he expects major game time but it could also be the main reason to think Frenkie DeJong is leaving too.

I'm not sure it's even still a thing Kessie to Barca but plenty (the media) seemed certain about it a while back, whether or not it plays into our hands for FDJ with Raheem's contract winding down remains to be seen but even if Sterling stays the £59m figure isn't a crazy amount, he could move anywhere DeJong but even an outright bid from us shouldn't be ruled out, remember we were seriously prepared to outlay the costs last summer for Kane to go with Grealish... And we'll be raising plenty of funds with player sales regardless usually anywhere between £60m-£100m if not even more, so all things considered we could easily afford to get both DeJong and Haaland if we want when you think Kane was meant to happen last year.

I'm not saying it's all simple but with player sales combined with Fernandinho's freed wages as well as Ferran Torres wages and fee too, then consider the fact Aguero freed wages never got laid out to his replacement then why can't we have both?

how do you get to that player sales figure ?

how do you get to that player sales figure ?

Estimations really we generally make quite a fair amount in player sales on kids we tend to sell them for £5m-10m a pop, think the least we've made in player sales for the last 4 years is about £50m it's quite normal now, when you think we haven't spent the Torres money from this season too yet and with the freed wages that have been generated from Torres, Fernandinho and Aguero.

Now keep in mind we didn't have the Torres money until January but were still prepared to still sign Kane, it shows we already have the funds if we want now Torres is gone, we'll make more too this summer on top of the fee Barca paid us, signing Frenkie DeJong already pays for itself potentially that's without other possible player sales of Sterling or Jesus or anyone else.

Could replace both Dinho and Gundo in one, with Palmer/McAtee/Grealish/Foden getting slightly more time in midfield. He’s nowhere near reached his potential, Pep would turn him into an absolute monster. If Sterling wanted Barca, it wouldn’t require a big outlay either

I don’t see us making that much money in player sales would be helpful if you guess who might sell for what money

CFG players like Herrera, Porro, Palaversa, Stevanovic, Itakura, Smith-Brown, Moreno, Bustos probably £35-40m there. Maybe one of Couto or Kabore would add another £5-10m.
And thats before we consider possible sales of domestic loan players like Doyle, THB, Fiorini, Rogers etc
And that's without possibly losing any of Mahrez, Sterling, Gundogan, Zinchenko, Bernardo(really hope not) or Jesus perhaps.

The last 10 years have seen incomings of £84, £69, £64, £52, £82, £32, £61, £27, £10, £40 (rounded up and all in millions, £521 million in total). The incomings have risen in recent years at least partly because the players leaving are of higher quality nowadays.

Absolutely sign him if hes available. Would be good Gundogan replacement just 1 year in advance.
Agree. Better 1 year in advance that 1 too late. Especially for this position where a player of this quality doesn't come along often.

Not if Raheem and Barca are up for the swap.

Haaland and De Jong for £63m is meltdown territory.

Do player swaps really work without any fee involved?

I know we have done one, a very successful one at that. With cancelo and Danilo but with transfer fee involved

Of course they work out - just look at the Mkhitaryan/Sanchez swap ;)

There was an interesting Athletic article about why it's unusual, even with fees. Upshot is that finding two players who agree is unusual. Then you have to negotiate the difference in their worth, which sounds more difficult than two single deals, as you're directly comparing players (hence the article title, "every owner thinks their pony is the prettiest at the fair").

Ultimately, it seems to be that restricting yourself to having to sell to the club that you want to buy from is just adding extra layers of complexity for little gain.
