Kalvin Phillips | Joins City on a 6-year deal

I would presume there’s a clause. Sounds like someone close to the player is talking. To reiterate I think he’ll be a top signing. I remember when we signed Gundo and Ferna there was a similar level of negativity. Not saying Phillips will have that type of impact but he has the potential to.

City better act quick. Villa getting ready to put in a bid according to the telegraph.

Some people think every signing is a bad one if it doesn’t immediately upgrade the first XI. Baffling.

KP can play solo 6, double 6, box to box (England). Bags of energy, very physical (wonder if it’s same people moaning that we need more physicality?), English (HG slot), been playing under another high intensity system, good age profile (5+ years), has filled in competently at CB before and, if the release clause rumour is right, cheap.

Are some genuinely expecting us to sign a world class 6 to sit on the bench behind our existing, elite-level 6, for £80m+?

Football Manager in here, it’s blowing my mind.

Get him in, quality signing.

That's great in a pinch but if Rodri gets a significant injury at any point then Kalvin Phillips' versatility isn't really going to be important because we're still going to be left with him in our most important position.

He's fairly limited and I'm not sure it's a massive plus that he can be limited in several positions.

I feel like there's a middle ground between Kalvin Phillips and an elite, world class, £80m+ holding mid who doesn't mind being a backup.

Hopefully I'm wrong and he breezes in without a problem but I look at how long it took Rodri to really hit his stride and then I look at Kalvin Phillips and can't help but feel we've got another scapegoat in waiting.

I haven't seen anything that makes me particularly excited about this transfer but no one knows midfielders like Pep so if he wants him, he gets him.

The versatility is important in a squad with a manager that has an enormous emphasis on versatility. Regardless, my point was that his versatility is just one of several reasons he’s a good signing at a £35m price.

Still, his primary role will be as a back up to Rodri at 6. Who knows how good he can be under Pep?

Edit: My other point was that I’m just flabbergasted at how many people get fucked off about any signing that isn’t for the first XI. Squad building and evolution is an art itself.

Not good enough for us. If we are going to spend more than 35m£ on him, it's ridiculous. We can find a way better player if we will scout around Europe. Typical Beguirstain - no negotiations, but release clauses.

Or maybe there is a plan within the club. We have a stated objective to have home grown players. The best two English defensive midfielders are him and Rice (Bellingham a prospect) - the most achievable for a sensible price is Phillips, a player who has excelled on the international stage whilst playing for a basket case club.

If the rumors are true that he has a cheap release clause, he has many options from which to choose his next club. Will he really come to City as a backup for Rodri?

Depends on what he wants, the chance to win medals (Ake) or to play week in week out. It worked out alright for Delph who ended up playing regular in a unfamiliar position before he came.

Pep doesn't treat the squad as 1st team & squad players so if he excels it puts pressure on Rodri.

He's more progressive than Rodri (although now Rodri's a goal scoring machine, maybe that's no so true), and could well do a similar role to the Berni box to box we've seen a lot of this season.

And bear in mind, Leeds played 42 games this season, whereas City played 58, and that includes lots of big glamour ties. I'd expect him to get regular games across a few positions, and maybe not be far off the minutes he gets for Leeds.

Fight another relegation battle with Everton and Aston Villa or play in the Champions League with City under the greatest manager of all time. Tough one that.

Why, where should he come? Our midfield trio is the best in the world, there's pretty much no one else who could fit in there!
