A bit harsh. They at least try and play decent football and certainly are worthy of their place in the PL. Let's not fall into the trap that somehow 'historic' teams deserve it more than smaller, less successful teams.
Aye, it’s a bit like saying the Rags should be in the Champions League because of their past performances, we know UEFA wanted to push that envelope and the new Chief of the Premier League is a Raggie, she’ll help make it happen.

Assuming Cucurella does end up at Chelsea then you have to say Brighton’s approach has been vindicated. They’ll have got about £10m more for the player than we were willing to pay. Shame, as he looked ideal for us but can understand why we felt the fee was too high.

Hopefully we do the same when/if any club comes for Bernardo this season

Seems to me like we’ve tried the old Barca tactic which they did for years, unsettle the player he wants a move, and somehow they dictate the price.

Think Cucu's agent did probably mislead us that we could get Cucu for 40m. That's one logical explanation why we were confident about signing him. Another possible explanation: Brighton indicated we could get him for 40m, say in May, and then changed their stance (with Chelsea's interest in the background?).

I think this is very likely. Feel like Chelsea probably communicated to Brighton that they will pay a lot more than us hence the sudden breakdown in talks. Fees probably changed as soon as Chelsea entered.

I suppose I'll stick my head above the parapet on this one.....

1. Yes we did, it was a release clause and great deal. He was clearly worth way more than that from the moment he stepped foot on the pitch.

2. Not surprised, would be a great deal for a young player who would fit seamlessly into your style of play.

3. We don't actually want to sell. Although I believe you bought Zinchenko for less than 2m and sold him for 32m, which is FOUR SQUARED times more. If we're going to be convinced, make us an offer we can't refuse. You'd do the same for any of your stars. If PSG want Foden? There will be a price you'd say yes to, and it would be astonishingly large.

A. The answer is its neither of us or both of us, it's just what has happened to football. Mouthwatering transfer fees were happening while we played at the withdean athletics track, and before you were taken over by Abu Dhabi. And more relevantly, rather than complain about it, we can surely both recognise that we've each taken advantage of it way better than most of our competitors, you're now one of the best teams in the world, we've gone from a relegation scrap in league 1 to top half of the Premier league. Poorly managed historically 'big clubs are languishing, well managed clubs like City and the Albion are flourishing. Under different management we'd just be one of the myriad of 'smaller clubs who can't compete'

Good post mate. If someone came in for Foden everyone on this forum would be demanding a sky high price be put on his head to deter potential buyers. Just like people demanded in the Bernardo thread when Barca came sniffing around.

At the end of the day Cucurella is your player so you are entitled to determine the transfer fee. Nobody is forced to pay it, and if they choose not to, you get to keep a player who is obviously highly regarded.

Yes, Bloom played poker here and got as much value out of his hand as he wanted. Chelsea may pay a little bit too much for him, but taking inflation into account we spent 50m for Mendy 6 years ago, who became the biggest flop ever this is not a bad transfer for them at all especially with Chilwell very injury prone and now they can let Alonso off the wage list and get some price out of Barca maybe.

It's odd because reports were Chelsea walked away from the Aké deal after being quoted far less for him by City than they're reportedly being quoted for Cucurella by Brighton.

Why walk away from a former club trained academy product, experienced PL player & longstanding Netherlands international, then potentially pay £20m more for one PL season, one international cap Cucurella?

Summats not adding up here! :-/

I think the likelihood is they walked away from the Ake deal because they got advised Kounde was coming onto the market and considered he had a higher ceiling than Ake so targetted him instead.

Never understood the hate directed to Brighton from some on here, 10m to them is a huge amount, and they took the initial risk on the player, great bit of business by them.

They thought they were getting kounde.

I still think this is bad judgement and arrogance at the part of City to not even reach the 50 mil suggested and wait for players agitation to do its part.

This is one billionaire talking to another billionaire with extremely fragile egos. Very difficult to twist arms esp of English clubs who are all infused with Cash. A Torres from Valencia may work but dealing with Bloom Levy, that’s totally different

We over emphasised on Kane tantrums and his moronic agent and we did the same over here.

This is an approach I have seen Daniel Levy take a whole lot of time when he would penny pinch on primarily target till the last transfer week and then suddenly the deal falls through.

Something must be going on about breaking even money wise because if it is 53m for a 23/24 year old is “reasonable” considering what we paid in the past for players!

This on going investigating from the premier have we done some sort of deal that we will not over spend and have net spend of a certain amount? Or is this new Pffp of a 3 year of 90%80%70% wages % of income making us be cautious?

What a load of crap !!
Just because City don`t agree on the same valuation of player makes us arrogant ?
FFS grow a pair.
I`m glad you`re noy holding the purse strings at City.
