Alcohol, hints, tips, advice etc.

Its gonna be very very odd and strange for me tomorrow night,
going to the game without any alcohol, first game since newcastle
as I couldn't go to palace on saturday because of work.
I'm on an early and will be home by 1.15 pm tomorrow, that
would normally mean starting on cans about 3 pm and
going to a pub near the ground by 6 / 6.15 pm.

Ninth day for me atm, tomorrow will be my tenth and an hard one.
It can be really tough doing something dry for the first time when the same experience would usually include drinking.
You could just wing it or, you could try and think about how you might approach it. Visualising how the day / evening might pan out can be quite useful and get your head in the right space ahead of time. Once you've done something once, even if it's only in your imagination, it's easier to do it another time. It's the same technique / principles that sports psychologists use in coaching and it can be pretty powerful.

Well done

Never got wanting alcohol at a match, sitting in stand feeling a bit half cut, needing a piss and can’t have a beer in ya seat anyway.
Actually depressing how many thousands head to the bar after half hour into a match because they’re that desperate for a pint

Its all I'v ever known, boozing and football. My away days will be curtailed too now,I honestly could not
imagine going without on them long train journeys etc its all part of the day, well a big part of the day actually.
All things come to end though,i suppose.

Fair play, I get it for away days

Home games I gave up drinking years ago, no loss at all. Hate sitting in stand feeling a bit half cut.

This thread actually inspired me to go 3 dry evenings last week for the first time in 5 years before I eventually dropped off. However again I haven't had a drink now since Friday and despite it being my 48th today it will be another dry evening.

I've been drinking large quantities of Strongbow/Taurus aldis own version every evening for ages. I don't even consider alcohol during the day but to unwind in the evening I could usually consume x3 of the
2 litre bottles in the evening easily.

My problems aren't missing the alcohol it's the restlessness and inability to settle once retired to bed that's the problem and I've found myself awake reading in the small hours to tire myself out. I am considering medication such as nytol to try and help with this.

Well done mate, but I’d speak to a doctor if I were you buddy

I love a pint but am getting deeply bored of it.

I had a blood test at the quacks recently and they said it’s 14 units a week for a man now. That’s 7 pints of average strength lager which I can exceed on an all dayer for the football.

I live alone and never have beer at home unless I’m staying in for something. I think it’s more a mixture of boredom and friends trying to get me to come out when I do drink.

Alcohol is my last true vice. I’d rather not let it go but I’d give it the kick if I had to.

It can definitely take a while to get your sleep pattern back and you will need to learn to fall asleep naturally again.

Something over the counter like Nytol might help you short term but it's only delaying the inevitable and you're swopping one sleep aid (alcohol) for another (nytol). Of course we all know how alcohol also causes poor quality sleep so it really is worth sticking with trying to relearn how to sleep.

Loads of great advice online - ideas around establishing a night time routine, listening to sleep podcasts etc.
Like all things, you could wait for it to get better (it will, eventually) or, you could try some new techniques to help you sleep.

The suggestion to involve your GP is also worth thinking about as your body is going to be going through some pretty radical changes which will be impacting you in many different ways.

Finally, very well done for taking the steps you're already taking, including posting about it and happy belated birthday!

Have you tried reading the politics forum before bed ?

Just checking in and although not perfect my sleep drastically improved last night in comparison to previously. I was in bed for midnight and although I woke twice in the night I feel more refreshed. The dull post drinking headache I was waking with also seems to have vanished.

The restlessness and general sweats/clamminess that was also making things problematic seemed to have calmed down as well.

I decided against the nytol in the end to see if things calmed down naturally? so far so good but it's baby steps in comparison but thanks to those who have offered help/advice/guidance etc.

Fcking brilliant, mate. Remember, hurdles are for jumping.

Have any of you done any liver function tests?
I see Superdrug do tests for under £40, is it worth it?
NHS health check for 40 to 74 year olds now includes the Liver test
