PL charge City for alleged breaches of financial rules

It'll be years. There has only been a white paper published, so there will be discussion of that, then it has to be drawn up as a bill to get it through Parliament, and then a wait until whenever it says the regulator will be in place. Chuck in the election in 18 months, and it may not happen for a long time.

100% The charges "united" this club more than ever and how ironic that is , the biggest own goal of all time, you could not make up that sort of sh1t!!
 
Already had a Dipper and a Rag going on about the charges. Both are university educated (I have opinions about that, but it's not for here). People will believe what they want to believe. I'm sure both those individuals would search further if their own clubs were involved, but they won't in this instance. Football is all about tribes and neither the Rags nor the Dippers want to believe anything other than City are state funded cheats.

I messaged them both that their bitterness made our wins even sweeter. Radio silence.......

Football is tribal - and the media have been playing on that... they are controlling the narrative and most people are either too stupid to realise or are blinded by their tribalism, this is why the Club needs to seek retribution when we are cleared of the accusations!

The need for click bait has short circuited reporting simply news into reporting as news their views of news (which is of course aimed at most likely clickbait).

I agree but would be surprised if the club does, it will always be something fans of other clubs raise.

One day soon,they will realise the history clubs are no longer the masses and they will have to pander to the new generation of fans across the world, who have only seen football for the last 10 years and have only seen a team in Sky blue dominate.

The club's messaging has been incredibly poor on this.

They should have been pushing out via their sources in the press that this is only 4 or 5 incidents that are generating dozens of charges each because of the time period covered.

They should be pushing much harder the idea that the non-compliance is to do with the PL changing the rules on what clubs have to submit in 2021.

They should be briefing people that the club wants this over and done with ASAP.


It's absolutely incredible to me that no one at City seems to have learned from the UEFA saga that their strategy of saying nothing just allows the narrative to be completely taken over by the people shouting loudest on the other side.

This is true, and this is why I - like the poster to whom the above response was given - have had ostensibly intelligent people comment to me on City's undoubted guilt. But they haven't read the CAS ruling or other documents relevant to the case. They simply take their lead from the media, who obdurately eschew any notion that we should be viewed as innocent until the contrary is proven.

On several occasions, I've reminded people who've blithely stated that we artificially inflated the value of the sponsorship from Etihad that the relevant contract was accepted by UEFA as being of a fair value, the relevant services to Etihad under that contract had unquestionably been provided, and Etihad had paid for the services in full. UEFA's allegation was that City's owner effectively refunded £50 million per annum to Etihad, which was in effect a favour to Etihad but meaning we forewent the opportunity to seek a main sponsor capable of paying the money itself.

City argued that this would have been a manifestly illogical and absurd course of action by the club, but the CAS panel discerned nonetheless that there could have been a benefit to the club in such an arrangement. Why they thought that isn't material here: the salient point is that the sponsorship wasn't alleged to be inflated.

And that's there in black and white in the CAS award for anyone who cares to read and digest it. Yet you outline this to people - even successful professionals - and they simply refuse to believe it. Depressingly, they choose instead to believe bad-faith, wholly partial clickbait drivel peddled by financially and legally illiterate clowns in the sports media.

Unfortunately, given that the charges have been laid, we can't expect media outlets not to mention the fact when we win the title. But the feverish nature of the reporting with the relentless 'no smoke without fire' subtext is risible. After all, the CAS proceedings showed an incompetent regulatory body pushed into an unwise and unlawful decision by malevolent pressure from venal, grasping member clubs.

One hopes that the PL hasn't been manoeuvred down the same track. But it's at the very least a possibility that they have, and, for that reason, any media outlets whose coverage doesn't refer to the prospect of City being vindicated are patently lacking in journalistic integrity.

I guess it depends if the club actually thinks that message would be disseminated to any meaningful extent, which I personally suspect it wouldn’t.
