Middle East Conflict

Hamas took those hostages to use as a swap. The more Israel attacks, the less likelihood there is of that taking place and the hostages being recovered as they’ve already said no negotiations until the attacks stop, which clearly isn’t going to be soon.

It’s horrendous but I’m not sure there’s a route right now for Israel to recover those hostages. Well, not one they’d be willing to take.
6th form thinking

A swap for what exactly ? Israel aren't going to leave Israel any time soon, and I doubt they'll remove the settlers in the West Bank any time soon either.

Prisoners that Israel has. They wouldn’t have been expecting either of those things at all.

It’s always an emotive subject to discuss, but there have been some excellent and interesting posts from all different perspectives I think most people like myself sit in the middle, we can see both sides but a small minority are so wedded to where they have planted their flag it becomes impossible to talk or debate

I hope people do spare a thought for all the innocent people who are suffering on both sides, my one hope is after this horrible tragedy that the minds of the world leaders will finally say enough is enough a peaceful and equitable solution must be found we can’t carry on like this
Don’t we all Ducado? Well I hope we do.
However what I fear the current course of action will do is draw more Arab militants into the conflict.
Would Iran ultimately get involved?
If they did what would America do?
I’d say Putin would love to see America involved.
This could get very nasty very quickly.

I am watching Irish current affairs programs covering this and they are highlighting the polarisation in the news and media of the support for one side or the other.

There is absolutely no doubt that the Palestinian plight does get sympathy in Ireland and I hope I have given context in my limited contributions as to why that might be, but I would say that especially with the atrocities we have witnessed from Hamas and objective reporting and interviewing of innocent ordinary Israelis caught up and affected by this, people who believe in a two state solution, who equally abhor the plight of innocent Palestinians caught up in it all, there is the acknowledgment that this is an impossibly complicated conundrum.
I’ve nearly been in tears hearing accounts from ordinary civilians.
A man in tears rejoicing that his very young daughter has been confirmed dead, as the alternative of fear and torture perhaps for years, as she was taken hostage, he feels was a worse option.

But we know better than most that the answers will only lie in dialogue.

I really don’t see a way forward in polarisation of opinion.
I believe compromises were made north and south in Ireland and I think John Hume and the likes of Mo Mowlam were instrumental.
I don’t think it would have been possible under Haughey over here and Thatcher with Britain.

Netanyahu is certainly not the answer. I haven’t a clue who on the Islamic front could show the leadership required.

Nice post. The world desperately needs some good leaders and I can't actually think of any.

In the main, Irish violence didn't get round to mass murder of the other side's population.
It's good to hope but it's just a dream to think it can be forgiven and no nation will be willing to keep the peace will put their own troops at risk from the extremists.

“Israel has the right, indeed the obligation, to defend itself and to ensure that this never happens again,”

“But how Israel does this matters. We democracies distinguish ourselves from terrorists by striving for a different standard . . . That’s why it’s so important to take every possible precaution to avoid harming civilians.”

Wise words from Anthony Blinken today.

I hope persuasive pressure is being put on Isreal by the US to behave accordingly.

Too late already, Gaza has been completely blitzed, schools , hospitals, hundreds and hundreds of dead innocent children - whilst cutting of their electricity and water. It’s sick.

Where dies it say you have to supply the enemy in a war? Get a grip.
As it happens Isreal has said they'll reconnect the water if Hamas stop rocketing Isreal.
Bet Hamas don't stop till forced to stop.

Is your argument here that you think everyone in Gaza should be considered an enemy? Or that you don’t know if the cutting of supplies to the citizen population could be considered a war crime?

So you've got to abide by the Geneva convention/human rights when your enemy couldn't give a crap about them?

Pretty much yes, that’s the point Blinken was making today too. You don’t respond to war crimes by committing war crimes yourself.

Biden said it as well, their main point of the defence is that it’s abiding by the rule of law that they see as the differentiator.
