Gas & Electricity

We have just applied to migrate to Octopus Tracker from their standard variable tarriff which would appear to be a no brainer. Variable electric price is currently 28.62p kwh and the tracker is 17p kwh, with both offering the same standing charge. The gas charges are 7.62kwh variable and only 3.64kwh on the tracker.

It's a one year contract, however there is no charge for exiting, but if you do so you cannot rejoin for nine months. You obviously have to operate a smart meter, with tarrifs calculated midnight daily.

One of the easiest digestable explanions of Octopus's tracker tarrif is described here in full by 3 Fat Seagulls.

There is another tarriff tracker that re rates every 30 minutes called Agile and is currently 11p kwh but we're happy with the tracker saving over the variable at 17p kwh and 3.64kwh

I went on agile last month, at least halfed my eletric bills straight away. Had a few times where it was in negative kWh so I was getting paid for using it.

So Far, it’s pretty useful if you avoid the peak use times of about 4pm-7pm. Even then though it’s averaged about 27p kwh which is about the uk average price anyway.

Paying 27p kwh between 1600-1900 hrs would be more than aggreable mate. Checked the data for the previous week and for each 24hr period the Agile averaged at around 14p kwh average daily, so good job.

Reassuring to know you can bale from either plan without penalty if the pricing starts to work against you. However happy to stick with the Tracker, due to us operating an open door cafe for the grandkids during peak time : /

Yeah it’s been good so far. Helps a lot that the rates are given 24 hours before, so when it does spike at points, I can just adjust usage between those times

Ha yeah tracker sounds better for you. I work out most of the day, and the Mrs is in, so it’s working well for us on the agile

Slightly off topic here but is related.

Was speaking to a customer of mine yesterday. Young mum with 2 toddlers. Her rent is 800 quid a month and her house has mould. She has complained to the letting agents who suggested she open the windows to help to get rid of the mould.

Absolute bastards.

Her youngest is already coughing every day and she can't afford heating the house as it is, nevermind some twat recommending that.

Advised her to contact Shelter.
They aren't just about homelessness and their website has tons of advice re issues like this for tenants.

Just been moved from Shell to Octopus and seem to have been put onto their Flexible Octopus tariff (estimated £395 per month). My only other options seem to be Octopus 12M fixed (estimated £364) or Loyal Octopus 12M fixed (estimated £352).

While moving to one of the fixed options looks tempting, is it likely that prices will drop in the next few months and therefore would work out better staying on the flexible tariff? Or would I probably be better off making the switch to a 12M fixed?

Prices expected to drop to their lowest level for 2 years. I have been been switched to Octopus from Shell too, apparently they are a decent company to deal with.

they reckon they'll drop 15% so probably £340 on the flexible, so not much in it

We were also bundled over, after the Avro debacle a few years ago. After applying on their online portal for a tariff change, our variable account was switched to their tracker in under 24 hours. A decent company by all accounts.

After that little lad died last year due to mold I thought there had been a ruling and the landlord can be held accountable now, I suggest she contacts citizens advice.

I'm with Octopus as well, but can't see how to move to the tracker.

I only have the 3 options shown at the bottom of your picture.

Although do you need smart meters to be able to take the tracker? I only have a gas smart meter, had multiple people come out to change the electric one, but each of them have said they can't do it as its so old and needs a specialist!

Need smart meters for tracker. I was with shell energy and got my sister in law to refer me to octopus before I was forced to move over, got the £50 credited to my account no dramas.

Hi mate. Should be Menu then My account and scroll down on the right hand side for change tariff. Maybe put in a request in to Octopus for a new gas meter so as you can migrate to tracker.

I just won 800 points on the "Wheel Of Fortune " Definitely on a roll this week

Was interested in this but I've had 3 companies install smart meters over the years, I'm on my 4th time now and NONE have managed to get the Gas meter to work...

This latest time the engineer from British Gas just had to "nip to the van and phone the office" after spending over an hour attempting to get it working... He drove off....

Not got the time or energy to attempt to sort it now so I'll just stick to manual readings for Gas.

Don’t be fooled by all the guff round Ictopus customer service. They are as bad as anyone. Smart meter fitted last October still not working and their customer service is shocking.

Try Octopus then mate, the have great feedback reviews ; )

The only company I've never had any mither with. They also fitted me a new smart gas meter were others had failed.

Same here. Electric one works fine but they've never managed to get the gas one working properly.
Apparently there has been lots of issue with the old generation ones not connecting when consumers changed supplier, so maybe best to check if you have the newer version SMETS2 meter.

Ours, supplied last year by Octopus is a smet2 EDMI smart meter with 2 buttons for connect and select. With our old one we had endless problems with it not connecting to the grid, but with this new one everything's been fine.

If suppliers don't listen, then launch a complaint or even escalate to the energy ombudsmen.

British Gas refuse complaints about smart meters.

Trust me I've tried and given up now forever.

Thick as fuck meters.

They said they are trying to sort a FIX out............ha three years and counting
