Jarrad Branthwaite

We have seven centre backs in our squad as it stands, two of whom could barely even get a spot on the bench after signing for us in January.

Nine, if you include Bah and Doyle coming back from their loans.

I just can’t see any way that we’ll be looking to add to our CB quota when we’ve got massive holes to address in the squad at FB, Midfield and potentially in Goal.

Makes no sense at all!
So lets look at the positives first, he is six foot five, and City have some of the smallest CB`s in the league, he can use both feet, so he can play either CB position, he is 23 so has up to 10 years left, he was out injured a fair bit last season, but when he came back his team improved dramatically , Everton player of the year, he has PL experience. Negatives he is as slow as Stones, Ake and Dias. Why we should pay £ 70 million for him, there is a 30 year gap between Stones, Akanji, Ake, and Kushanov, Ries, Bah, the 3 defenders bought in january, Doyle is getting sold. So you have 2 defenders who started last season crap, as your only 2 fit and experienced CB`s.
An alternative way to look at this, buy Al Nouri for LWB, promote McFarlane to LB, Ake, Gvardiol as LCB, Dias, Branthwaite, CB, Stones, Akanji, RCB, Nunes RWB, Khusanov RB, with Bah and Ries playing in the U21 where they will be available for the first team, and of course anyone who does not feel like they will get game time, with this new very physical coach, being allowed to leave.

I wonder if we could sweeten the deal by loaning them Stones for the last year of his contract
I get his injured, but I’d rather keep stones. World class on his day, provides leadership and he’s a fan favourite.

I don’t get why so many so fans want him sold. Even if he plays say 15-20 games a season - he’s so important to us

Branthwaite Grealish deal some sources reporting. That would suit both parties
But he’s super injury prone too ?

I still think we can hold off on CBs until next season when we decide if Doku is good enough or not and get a winger then.

Sell Stones. Loan Bah and Reis. Doyle is sold too
Left with
Gvardiol, Dias, Khusonov, Ake. And promote JSP. Akanji can be sold if we get a good fee but he can be kept since Ake and Dias are injury prone

After a year surely Bah or Reis will be ready and they can take up Akanji or Dias’s space. Then sell Ake and get an English left footer.

Stones needs to go make room for Khusanov, Reis, Bah and for Gvardiol to play in his true position. Mfuni will be pushing soon enough also.
I don’t think any of the players you’ve mentioned are as good as stones was. Gvardiol has the highest potential.

Why do we need to get rid of stones? His leadership and quality are priceless. Even if he only plays 15-20 games a season I’d still keep him.

In your list there’s two inexperienced youngsters who’ve barely played as well

So sell the entire defence?

The point there being what Stones was, not what he is now. We’d still have Dias. Plus, without going out on loan, how would they gain experience?

well that’s how rebuilds go. I literally described that sell them over time.
You sell Stones this summer. Thats obvious. He never plays. And he’s body is done. He’s on 250k the club wants to reduce the wage bill and Pep said he can’t keep players they can’t play every 3 days. Braithwaite doesn’t even fit in that description btw.

Akanji is good enough to start games. He’s a rotation option.
Ake is good but his body fails him. He can’t play every 3 days.
Dias hasn’t reached his debut season heights in a long time. Wasn’t good this season or last season. Was decent in 21/22. He’s only been in great form next to Gvardiol. You can move him off if he doesn’t improve and he’s getting slower and slower. And older and older.
What do you think we signed Bah Khusonov and Reis for ?

Part of me think Akanji will be the last to leave out of Stones, Ake and himself.
Yes. He’s still versatile doesn’t get injuries (this season was weird) a good 3rd RB option and a 4th option CB. One of Pep’s favourites tho … I just don’t want him to change the whole system and shoe horn him in like he did against S’Hampton and Palace final…

All valid points.

I’m not saying he’s shit, or that there’s no need at all to refresh at CB - just that given the outlay we’ll be committing to cover two full backs, two or potentially even three midfielders and in all likelihood a keeper as well - spending £70m on another CB when we’ve got nine already is unlikely to be seen as a priority.

That’s one for next summer, not this.

In my view.

Gvardiol has a lot of attributes that are fare superior to Boulders. He is almsot at Stones peak level and will get there in the next few years.
