The Conservative Party

Never seen the Tories described as having "some modicum of actual respectability" before!

While I get you, I think to state that the Tories were “always this bad” risks letting them off the hook for the way they’ve dragged this country down into the gutter over the last few years (particularly since Johnson was in charge).

Misleading the House, Party-gate, announcing policies to the press before the chamber, the PPE scandal… these are not things the Tory party would’ve been caught dead doing back in the 80s and 90s. I might have vehemently disagreed with them on many political issues, but they used to have standards - the modern party has none. It’s now a rabble of absolute reprobates who care nothing for actual conservative tradition or values and I find it very depressing.

Out of curiosity, if he was to stand in a by-election as a Reform candidate what do you think the outcome would be?
It’s laughable that he’d win, easily, especially considering he was in Government for over 6 years and is, by Reform definition at least, ‘part of the problem’.
Still, I’m sure the lunatics who believed it was all the fault of the EU, and now believe it’s all the fault of immigrants will be well looked after by Nige and Bobby J…

I know the constituency well, and I’m not so sure. It’s definitely right wing, but I’d say it was still pretty Tory.

This is the list of settlements from wiki:

  • The District of Bassetlaw wards of: Clayworth; East Markham; Rampton; Sturton; Tuxford and Trent.
  • The District of Newark & Sherwood wards of: Balderton North & Coddington; Balderton South; Beacon; Bridge; Castle; Collingham; Devon; Farndon & Fernwood; Muskham; Southwell; Sutton-on-Trent; Trent.
  • The Borough of Rushcliffe wards of: Bingham East; Bingham West; Cranmer; East Bridgford; Thoroton

Thought there might have been a few small mining towns in there but they must be in an adjoining constituency. Those are pretty much all wealthy settlements. It’s the part of the world where Nottingham people who make a few quid tend to move. Those types won’t vote for Reform in large percentages. Bingham is a bit rough in parts, I guess. Went to my only gay wedding in Southwell a couple of years ago. Plenty of money round there. It’s a wealthy part of the world that (I think) hasn’t been very much affected by immigration. Not like other former Tory strongholds.

Also Jenrick is difficult to warm to with zero charisma. There is something quite robotic about him. Can’t see locals warming to his wife, either.

Doubtless there will be some locals that like him, but he’s no Ken Clarke or Simon Hughes in terms of local popularity with the local electorate.

Plus he’s a fucking snake, and plenty (although certainly not all) will see that.

I could be completely wide of the mark, but I’m not sure he’d win.

Hopefully you’re right and I suppose it would explain why he won’t step down. He’s undoubtedly a snake and hopefully he’ll get his comeuppance sooner rather than later.

Just been looking and it seems that the Tories retook the council seat of Newark West from Reform last summer.

It’s a very good question and one I really wouldn’t be sure of the outcome of. It’s not just conservatives vs reform, it could really bring Labour into play, which you’d never have expected in this constituency.

Buyers remorse will be a recurring theme for reform voters.

I’m not sure he would either. He’s burned some bridged there and those kind of people hold serious grudges.
