Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

So the last of the three players who was "promoted to the first team" has now gone for 18 months so the new manager won't be able to have a look at him in the summer

I think you've got yourself confused there.

The three who were promoted were Denayer, Iheanacho and Lopes.

We should be dictating the terms to Celtic not the other way around, what a fucken shitey decision.

I'll bet he doesn't make it now, terrible choice for loan!

Fucken shame on you

I wish you well in 18 months time

Shit rules where a great young talent can go on loan to Septic and help them win the league

Shit decision City, very shit decision!

Roberts would have been better suited in championship or in Europe.
Fucks sake City why the fuck are we gifting these cunts players on cheap rates on long contracts
Pissed off a lot of people with this move, stop loaning players to Celtic ffs

Wtf why are City loaning Septic players to win the Scottish league every season, this is pissing off the majority of fans in Scotland!

Fucken English Messi will turn into a diving, self important prick with a huge attitude, really terrible loan deal
Go drunk, you're home.

While I'm no fan of the cultish sectarian bullshit that infects both sides of the Old Firm, I think Celtic is a decent fit for him at this stage of his career. City have clearly built up a decent relationship with them, there is a connection through Ronny Deila having spent some time at City which has probably influenced this I suspect ?
Denayer certainly seemed to benefit last season, getting some good European experience and making himself a fixture in the Belgique squad, while Guidetti at least managed to get a degree of match fitness up there and get a contract in Spain out of it.
It is a very average standard but at least he's around the best players in the spl and Deila does try and play a bit of proper passing football. The championship is a much more relentless dogfight of a division and the physical and mental pressure to perform could well be too much for such a slight technical player like Roberts just now, he certainly struggled to make any great impression on an average Fulham side last season.
I don't know about the 18 months at all tho, and I hope we at least have the option to reassess in the Summer, surely Pep will at least want to get a look at him if he performs well over the next few months ?

Again, yet Iheanacho was labelled a 20 goal a season striker last summer. That's before any minutes in the first team.

Did you question that? Probably not, you would have had I said it :)

Roberts is one of the few young players out there I have had the pleasure of watching outside of City, before he came here. Yes I do think he has enough about him to challenge for a spot in a lower part of the table club. I didn't say start, but 'challenge'.

I'm not sure why you think those minutes etc arent enough for a Bournemouth, Sunderland or Norwich etc but enough for Celtic. That's rather odd.

And looking at it your way, what convinced City to sign him?
I've not a clue why you're banging on about Kelechi, I ignored your initial reference to him for the same reason and still can't see what you're talking about.

If you watched Roberts before he came to City then you must have watched every (early) Fulham game as the Fulham supporters themselves didn't see much. Fulham didn't think he showed enough at the bottom of the Championship yet you think he's shown enough for the bottom of the PL?

You're comparing Bournemouth, Sunderland or Norwich fighting to stay in the PL to Celtic running away with the SPL? Seriously? Currently Celtic are 22 points ahead of Ross County in 4th spot, coincidently Bournemouth (in 16th spot) are 22 points behind Leicester. Celtic have a goal difference of +44 (twice ours, joint leaders with Spuds on GD).

What convinced City to sign him? Potential and very thorough scouting with the full knowledge that he'd probably need a loan (the right loan).

Some of the loans over here have been awful imo but loans such as this are very good for the kids. Some of this crap of sending kids to play in long ball trog teams in the 2nd div, after they've been coached to play pass & move, is more like punishment imo & more likely to destroy them rather than 'make' them, they have no idea how to play that shite.

Rony Deila though is a disciple of the 'City way' of playing football & has shown in the case of Denayer & other youngsters that he is willing to use kids in important games & give them a chance to prove themselves.

Pellegrini has shown that he has no worries about throwing them into a City squad or team with no experience, or when they completely are out of form, out of position, if it suits him due to injuries etc, but then will mainly hand them back to Txiki & Co to deal with when he no longer needs them, even when he singles them out as being 'future City players'. They are pawns to him. Cannon fodder.

I'd trust any of our kids to get decent consideration of their development under Rony Deila & it will be upto them to take the opportunities given. If Roberts has got what it takes, then Deila will introduce him to their first team, either straight away or gradually from the bench, in time, maybe even for next season & he'll get to play in a passing team, against rough arse opposition who are desperate to beat him & maybe even play crucial games in Europe.

If he can't make an impression & get in their team, or is only 'ok' but nothing special when he does, it will be because he genuinely isn't good enough & we'll know. On the other hand, they could hand us back a player & if Pellegrini is gone, as expected, then he'll most likely get a chance at City when he gets back.

Really great move for the kid either to come back as a City player or make a career. Good luck to him.

If he gets a regular place in their starting 11 it will be a good move although 18 months does seem a very long time. As a previous poster said he should see a lot of the ball and will get to play in European games which he never would at City. If he is not playing regularly it will be a very long 18 months - hopefully there is a clause which allows him to be recalled if this is the case.

I must admit I am struggling to see the logic of spending 12M on him when we did. If he had kicked on then we could have signed him for a larger fee as we did with Sterling and KdB. The Celtic fans must be pinching themselves at our generosity towards them (or maybe not given their rag love-in connections).

you're out of date, Roberts was training in the senior squad along with Kelechi.

Loads of the EDS train with the senior squad each week, but the three we officially promoted on stage at the city live thing were Denayer, Lopes and Iheanacho.

I think yoyu are right,Roberts was with the senior squad very soon if not immediately and the impression he made with them was very good. he did get a couple of niggling injuries which seemed to have caused him problems as since then he hasn't quite been firing.

I think the reason Roberts wasn't "promoted" to the senior squad with the other 3 is because he'd never been in the EDS. He was a new signing and went straight into the first team squad, not sure he was even here when City Live happened

better off to Celtic, rather than Championship side. he will get a chance to taste Europe competition. 18 month loan is fair enough to me. the important thing is, he plays regularly with decent team like Celtic.

I think we paid £2 mill (?) up front with the rest of the £11 mill fee based on appearances (for us and possibly England seniors). That's only going to get paid if he develops and this loan is perfect for him.

i think he's one of the most talented young players in the country, so hopefully he does well at celtic and it provides him a stepping stone to being in our first team
