Don’t see how anyone can doubt he should save the Zaha goal. And like many I don’t think he is a great shot stopper but in this team with the few goals we concede probably doesn’t need to be. Am sure I heard a stat we have conceded from 50% of shots on target this season but sure I’ve probably misheard.

I don't think he should have saved it. If it was a shooting drill, I'd expect him to save it 9 times out of 10, but the fact is he got put into a shite situation by Laporte losing it and had to backpedal 30 yards then shift over as Gallagher put in Zaha. I'm not surprised his bearings were slightly off and he left a foot of the goal open.

It's also a complete fluke of a finish I don't think Zaha could repeat in a year of trying, he scuffs it in a way that it bends around Ederson completely unnaturally with his left foot. A straight shot would have been saved.

It's a mistake, but he was in a situation where a mistake is not unusual, and god knows the rest of the side make plenty of their own mistakes.

It's a stat. that proves nothing. The nature of the goals are the only things that are relevant in judging the keeper. A tap in, a 35yard screamer, a deflection, in off a post, through a crowded area, one on one etc can all be shots on target, whether the shots on target are saveable is unique to each particular incident and rarely comparable for statistical value.

The problem Ederson has in general with stats is that he faces so few shots. Part of this is his own doing, he is the best keeper in the league at claiming crosses, free kicks and corners which prevents a huge amount of shots from knockdowns and half clearances. Part of it is because he helps us dominate possession so much. Part of it's just being in a really good side.

Whatever the cause, he's faced 17 shots on target in 9 games and conceded 6 goals.

If you look at the 6 goals...

The Son goal that deflected off Dias.
Mané goal which is a 1v1 (which are Ederson's weakness) that you'd expect a good finisher to score.
Salah goal that people think is the goal of the season.
Penalty against Brighton.
Zaha goal people think he should have saved.
Gallagher goal where his defence let the kid have an unmarked, unchallenged shot from 10 yards out.

So we're talking about 1 goal he might have done better on? In 1/4 of the season? He doesn't really have a chance with 3 of them, and the 2 Liverpool goals are just great finishes by world class players.

If you go back to his Benfica days, he was facing twice as many shots on target and had a save% nearly 80%. He's not better, teams that face the most shots always have goalkeepers with the best save %'s - Edouard Mendy has faced 33 in 9 games. More shots, lower quality, more saves.

Two smart saves, that first one in particular. He should be making that save but it wasn't really routine. Ronaldo hit that very very well to the point it was almost surprising but he got his angles right and his reactions were there.

I think he should set up a playstation so he has something to do for the 90 minutes. Must be so cold and boring. Goretex goalie kit would be handy too. Maybe a hot water bottle strapped to his chest and a pair of knitted wooly mitts.

As I’ve said many times, we spend a great deal of time watching Ederson and compare him to ’keepers we don’t spend much time watching and say that Ederson doesn’t make saves or should make more saves or makes mistakes compared to other keepers…

Watch all these other keepers closely, ALL OF THEM make a great many mistakes and let goals in they shouldn’t.

I wouldn’t swap Ederson for any other keeper in the world.

Doesn't make saves, Alisson miles better keeper according to some numpties...

As I said not long ago in here, pick any single season you want and Alisson has made more errors in that one season alone than Ederson has in his entire City career. All 3 of West Hams goals against the scousers today were goalkeeping errors from Alisson, not maybe he could have done better situations, errors.

Remember that the next time a few rush in here to bash him for not making an unbelievable save he has no right to make.

Because other GK makes a mistake, we cannot criticize Ederson then?

Again, I am really happy of having Ederson and he's a top 3 GK for City, but he can be so much more than that. Let's compare De Gea and Ederson for example(I strongly prefer Ederson for us). There were 2 saves yesterday to Gabriel Jesus and KDB from De Gea that were incredible. Quick reflexes, explosive and quick feet. De Gea makes 1 of those every 2-3 matches. At the same time De Gea makes a horrible blunder every 2-3 matches. For a team like us, we need security in our GK and Ederson might be the least prone to blunder GK in the world. He is great and a perfect match for us.

BUT you will never see Ederson making impossible/really difficult saves consistently like other GK are capable. Whenever the opposition scores, I have never felt Ederson made a huge mistake, but several times I think he could've done better and that several other GK would save 30-40% of those while Ederson saves 0% of those. Again, I am really happy of having a great sweeper, a very secure GK, and his excellent passing ability, but he can be so much better.

He can be Neuer, and it's so obvious what his weaknesses are, that I am just amazed he hasn't improved them at all. His weaknesses are: 1v1, slow reflexes, and he is very slow and non-explosive whenever he stretches. The 1v1 are inexcusable: the way he stretches, the way he attacks can be easily improved with constant practice. Just check how Neuer or even Cortouis take on 1v1, and then compare to Ederson.

Slow reflexes and explosiveness/power in his legs/stretches can also be improved with proper training, especially when you have a slow/heavy GK like Ederson. There is room for improvement there. And that's what annoys me. He can truly be better, and turn into, not only a top 3 GK for us, but the best GK for any team.

Its a good post in that you have carefully explained your rationale. You would have thought he would have specialist coaching for the aspects you mention.

We have the best goalkeeping coach in the league. We have won back to back golden gloves with Ederson and he is joint top this year. What more do people want ffs.

I think he's carrying an injury. Stomach or something. Something not quite right with him.
Carrying a hell of a lot of ink on him. Gets bored and always prone to moments of utter madness. Has so much passing ability that I wonder why he ended up as a goalkeeper.
Allison is the Ronald McDonald of goalkeepers - a clown.
