Alcohol, hints, tips, advice etc.

No one said it was going to be easy.
It's a hard habit to break.
I have been drinking (legally and illegally) for around 50 years and there are days when I just want to go and get hammered, but I resist.
It's hard sometimes but I know that the urge to drink will soon pass.

The realisation is important.

Realising that you are out of the loop.
Realising that it's other people who are making themselves look stupid and getting into scrapes.
Realising that you won't feel rough the next morning.
Realising that the time and money wasted in the bar can be spent with and on your family.
So best wishes for the battle ahead (and it is a battle!) and hopefully you won't stumble too many times.
Good luck.
Not gonna lie..I thought this was song lyrics at first!

After my cancer scare last year, I was told more fresh fruit and vegetables etc. I ate terribly for far too long so I converted to vegetarianism to force myself to eat well. It’s worked. You begin to enjoy cheese salad in a sandwich or pasta and vegetables at night. It takes a while but I couldn’t consider a cheeseburger again.

Howdy.....another drink free weekend under the belt. Still exercising, maybe had a few dodgy meals over the weekend but I'm not going to feel bad about that. At the moment I'm playing for the feeling rather than the stats, don't want it to become the next fixation. But it's a good day.

Whilst this thread is a near endless supply of inspiration and support I'd particularly like to thank @Marklr for one of your responses to me the last time......I am very much coming around to the idea that I can't have even one. Infact, it made me think about other issues I've had and that gnawing, agitated feeling when you just wanna get fucked up.....you've given me something to mention to my therapist and for that I will remain grateful.

You're welcome, mate. I completely fucked my life up with alcohol, like many others, only, God saved me and gave me a mission to help others with what I learnt. I fucked that up too, so, here I am on Bluemoon talking utter site. haha.

Good on you. It's that freedom that I feel most...not being a slave to the drink. It's a fucking horrible poison for us. A substance that will destroy us if we have one little sip.

I like a bit of weed in the evening these days...it's not a replacement for alcohol or anything like that (there's a ten-year gap between giving up drink and having a joint). I've bought a vape for cannabis, as I've now given up tobacco. It's an expensive vape and needs to be kept clean every few days, and the only thing that removes the sticky residue that forms inside the vape is....pure alcohol. 99% proof alcohol! I had to buy a gallon online. How ironic. It's under the kitchen sink..haha. Dodgy stuff, though.

I watched a show last week, I can't remember what it was called, but it had these freaks in it, some poor little African lad's legs were bloated up and he couldn't even stand, he had to be carried around, There was a girl whose heart was on the outside, but there was one guy who by his own volition purposefully injected snake venom into his blood stream..he'd grab a snake by it's head, hold it over a container and wait for it's fangs to drip then he'd dilute it a bit with water and put it into a syrette, sounds like a nutter right? This loony said he was building up his immune system, But what's the difference really isn't that what drinkers do? Knowingly poisoning their selves? In fact, scratch that, that's a new excuse! I drink to improve my immunity! If I get attacked suddenly by a bottle of whiskey then I've got the anti bodies to deal with it

I'm going to start meeting up with pals and do activities away from drink.

I'm not sure if it's an age thing but whenever I go out these days the night flies by, don't remember half the conversations that have been had and I'm £70 to £100 down. (That's not a gloat, I'm highlighting the needless expense of it some times). Nights out in my early 20s felt like they lasted forever, didn't drink as much either.

I was chatting about going out to a couple of pals and we all agree that you are chasing something you are not going to reach or achieve. Whether that's our youthful past, a higher level of being pissed or something else I don't know.

Next outing I'm going to suggest driving to the peaks and just having a walk and chat followed by food.

One thing Iv been watching and getting interested in is wild camping.Been watching several youtube vloggers for abt 1 year, been steadily buying some of the gear i need and now, with summer coming,Im thinking of going out somewhere local.
I know i need some kind of hobby or distraction from alcohol and that could.possibly be one to help me.
A big problem i have is that i dont drive, probably a blessing in disguise over the years with my drinking ! So getting to some wild.camping area could.be difficult.Anyway, its one option Im looking at.

I’d say the fact that half of the pubs in walking distance from mine are unusable speaks volumes. Why? They’re full of turds. Men who’ve given up on life drinking themselves to death, scally bastards who’d fight over the colour of someone’s trainers, cliques ensuring you don’t get served until they do or just run by morons who employ morons.

I look at one lad who I assume is about my age and he was in hospital with cirrhosis of the liver last year. He was told to stop drinking and, for a little while, did. Last few times I’ve seen him? Pissed up. He’s drinking in another pub now so I assume they barred him.

His other half was a lovely girl. No malice in her at all. She’s rightly finished with him and is now seeing someone else who looks like a decent fella. People always say she seems so much happier.

One gaffer either likes you or he doesn’t. If you’re not with him then he’ll get his regulars to force you out. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.

There was a pub in Garston, where if the landlady didn't like the look of you, you would be out of the door before you could even order!

That’s fair enough if you’re a scrote but otherwise harsh.

I can honestly say every negative social experience I’ve ever had is in a local pub. Some are absolute hell holes.

If you haven't already, check out Patrick Dickinson. You can ignore that he likes a drink, but his content is good. I'll assume that you live in the Manchester area - plenty of wild camping available if you could get a train from town or Stockport to Edale.

200 days for me but summer is always a struggle with BBQ and sunshine being a big tempter for a jug of Old Rosie over ice.

Can I ask that anyone who knows a pub that sell Guinness 0 in Northern Quarter list it on here please

Fringe Bar. I was in there having Guinness Zero last night, albeit out of a can that they pour into a glass for you.

We started off at the Fringe for my mate’s birthday the other week. I’d never been there before.

After my numerous stays in hospital last year, my lifestyle was asked after often and I was advised 14 units of alcohol a week was my limit. I’d often exceed that on a day watching football so it’s been time to majorly cut back.

I’m going to have no more than 14 to start with and then see if I can reduce that even more. I can’t see too many negatives.

I’ve posted before, my old fella who passed away last year at 89 was an everyday drinker but he was disciplined, he’d only have his 2 glasses of wine and either a gin or whisky after around 10pm, then kipsville about 1am.

Another old boy I know was still cricket umpiring at around mid 80’s last year, he’d call at our local have a couple of blackcurrant drinks and drive home, he’d then have his half bottle of wine, kind of an incentive scheme with benefits.

It’s those kind of routines that help moderate drinking for those that can do so, it’s not for those, like many brave posters on here, that have severe alcohol problems, their only intake has to be zero without compromises.

I’ve done 66 days without a drink to improve my health, lost a stone of about 2 I need to get to a healthy weight, all down to the booze. I also have a bit more energy and BP us down to 139/85 whereas before I could get to upper 170’s which for someone with arrhythmia is not great.

Glad to hear that you are feeling the benefits of not drinking.
Keep up the good work.

If you have a bike, just get into bike touring. Stick your tent on the back, a couple of panniers and off you pop. You can get to Australia in 6 months. Failing that it’s 35 miles to Derbyshire along the Monsall Trail to Bakewell . There’s a campsite there for a nice overnighter and a few Bakewell tarts. You’ll never look back.

So after 2 months completely sober I had a drink but it was planned by me and the wife to see if I could reintroduce alcohol in to my l8fe with out falling off a cliff.

It was okay apart from feeling completely drunk off 2 drinks I was able to not carry on in to oblivion and the craving the next day wasn't there.

I will drink again but it requires control. The old me who was at the very bottom mentally and had no control is now gone and with my family now aware they can help me
