Arsenal (H) - FA Cup | Post Match Thread

Let's take the positives. We went toe to toe with an in form team leading the league and undefeated in many games, and won.

Not only that, we competed. We have to play ourselves back into form and this was a good way to do it. It always seems to be something new, yesterday Rodri decided he suddenly can't pass a football after years of being a sublime passer. But you get through it, knuckle down and try again.

No idea what Ake was thinking when he hit that with his right foot, but I'm very thankful he did! Alvarez showed when he came on what was needed - have a bloody shot!

Looking back at the Holding foul on Haaland in the opening minutes, I can only think that the referee has interpreted that Haaland fouled the arsenal player first. That's a foul that's not given anywhere else on the pitch or at corners, and the frustrating thing is that var could agree either way with whatever the ref said - if he gives the foul our way var isn't contesting it. But in the opening minutes no way the ref is giving such a foul and facing a possible red card call, so instead he falls back on a flimsy position of attacker making the first foul when they're both being pretty physical, up until the point Haaland wins the duel and Holding takes him out. Also thought the ref should have booked their right back for persistent fouling, three on Grealish in the first twenty mins...

Felt much better when Laporte came on although frustrating for Stones. Akanji bless him has the belief that he'll get decisions awarded fairly playing for city in this league. On one occasion he was fouled and the ref waited until he came back and won the duel before waving play on, when the only way he could go was back to Ortega and let the attacker close him down. On another occasion he played the offside and appealed for it as it was clear and he's facing his own goal, but no flag or whistle so he played the ball and immediately the attacker is on him. Poor performance from the officials, yet again, who seem to believe that because city are regarded as such a good team in possession that just us having the ball is advantage enough, even if we're running backwards and have to lump in out of play.

Still, we won. We battled, we accepted responsibility and we are in the next round where we will no doubt again get premier league opposition. Week off now too, which is a rarity.

5 things I'm taking away from tonight.
1. Long balls to Haaland work.
So nearly led to a goal, Rob Holding couldn't cope all night, had tons of help from Paul (Fucking) Tierney and still ended up booked and taken off at half time. This has to be part of our game plan. Haaland seemed to enjoy the battle.

2. Ake is Ace.
Great finish, kept a massively in-form Saka completely anonymous. I like Cancelo for his attacking strength but Ake is the best defensive left back we have by a country mile.

3. Gundogan + De Bruyne + Rodri = Too Slow.
I hate to say it cos I love Gundo, but in difficult games we need pace in midfield and you ain't dropping Rodders or Kev.

4. We need to keep Bernardo Silva.
Please ... whatever it takes ... get him an "ILovePortugal" T-Shirt ... buy his Mrs a dildo the size of Belgium to keep her happy ... do anything to get him to sign a new deal. If the effort and ability that Bernardo put in tonight is him on wind-down then God Help the opposition if he's ever motivated. I love this guy and I think we'll only realise how good he is when we don't have him anymore.

5. Arsenal are the real deal but we can still do this!
That was a fucking hard game. Space was at a premium and it was a constant struggle to get through their press. They have skill and strength and that wasn't even their first eleven. Having said that, their main threat is Saka and he was in Ake's back pocket throughout. In fact Ake got so bored he had to score a goal to Iiven himself up. They also visibly tired on 70 minutes and even with subs + chasing-the-game they were unable to get the ball off us by the end. We will need to be 90-100% perfect to win both league games against them but Pep will have learnt loads from tonight and we definitely gained a psychological advantage. As well as a step closer to another FA Cup :)

Note to Self : Don't start writing lists at 1:30am
Gundagun before Kev this season, Gundo definate much more involvement imo
Kev has had to many shite games this year he looks very leggy at times & if he's not in the game within the 1st 15-20 he struggles

Both will be hard to replace but Gundagun is top draw on the ball

Love Kev but again tonight he was no more than 6-10

Had paid for a ticket on the FA Cup scheme but didn’t go last night. My Google Wallet still showing the Wolves match when I checked last night and this morning so wouldn’t have been able to get in anyway.

What is going on?

Did we have 1 in the 1st 45? Rodri miles over & Kevs chance went wide but can't think of anything till the goal & shot from ? Turner saved then had had treatment after it?
Alvarez post & 1 more straight at him

it’s a bit of a blur tbh here’s the full time stats.

He brings such a fluency to our build up play and tonight we looked very stilted when we tried to pass it around at the back
We have played poor with Ederson too so to say thay we were missing fluency today is wrong. We have been missing it entire season. Atleast Ortega made some decent saves

A real positive winning that game whilst also getting an insight into what didn't work effectively.

They'll be better at home in the league but we know exactly how to beat them.

I thought they were great, specifically in the first half. Hopefully that is what we need to kick ourselves into gear.

Mid 90’s you’d see United or Arsenal play an FA cup game and think they were there for the taking - still they’d score and get through and you’d think how? We’ve just got that now. In game management is superb even when all the cogs aren’t in sync

It didn't show on mine either but I just used the barcode as normal and it worked fine.

Just watching the match which I recorded yesterday… I know strange sleeping patterns mean you get up at 3.30 am to watch your team… why did it take Laporte soooo long to get ready to come on when John Boy went down? Surely when he saw JB on the ground for that length of time he should have started to gear up? Even if he thought Dias or someone might be the sub he should have been observant and ready?

I like watching the game when the angst is not there and I know the result. You see things you don’t notice in ‘real’ time. Things like Arteta’s expressions where his eyes go very weird looking. :-)
I think the delay was more on the city coaching side. If we subbed him one before the half, that's one of our 3 designated sub instances burned. If we wait until the whistle you can sub Stones off at half time without it burning one of those 3. I think Pep wanted to do that, but when he realised the ref was going to play a few more minutes decided to make the move.

Thank you. I didn’t realise that it made a difference if he had been subbed at half time. Obviously the commentators either didn’t know that either or maybe, giving them the benefit of the doubt, just didn’t think/remember about it.

Ake is much maligned , well deserved MOM tonight , and I’ll take a Diaz / Laporte partnership all day long if Johnny is injured.
Is he? Never heard a derogatory word said about him.

I’ve seen it said that we play differently with him as left back (similarly as with Stones at right back), where, even when he plays well, he doesn’t have the quick incisive forward passing we are used to do our game is different and not as threatening going forward.

And that’s true.

Ake = defender, Cancelo = ?

On matters of fan safety and the positioning of Cup away fans, City have lost our trust and confidence.

They act like the three wise monkeys !!

Our build up play was very average and the whole performance suffered from it. This is bound to happen when one of the CBs "is not ready" (Pep about Stones), one of the FBs is a CB and the other FB is 18 y.o. When the build up play is average, the attack is average too, even if it features the best striker in the world.

Pep knows it better than us, will be interesting to see the solutions he will come up at Spurs and Arsenal. We were a bit lucky that Arteta started with 6 changes to his first XI. And even with 6 changes they were the better team in the first half. Things improved with Laporte and then Walker coming in.

Cancello.Walker.Alvarez Días.Bernie Foden didn't start either...so we weren't full strength
None of those have been starting recently. Personally I'd agree that if all players were in top form all of those would start but none of them at present ae in Peps first choice 11 recently
