Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Always best to go out & walk the dog after a game like that, overall don’t think we did enough to win the game, thought 1-1 was a fair reflection, bigger picture is we are undefeated, Haaland is flying, and that’s 3 tricky away games out of the way, hopefully get a decent result in midweek & onto Spuds which is gonna be a great game, if offered the points we have at the start I’d of taken it, given Chelsea & Liverpool look off it and Spurs & Arsenal are flakey at best it’s looking like we’re gonna be the ones to beat again

They’re wilfully ignoring the blown whistle that stopped everyone playing. The decision was wrong but it wasn’t a disallowed goal, the decision happen long before the shot. Stones was stood there throwing his arms in the way - just because he was more worried about the ball hitting his head than any possibility of a goal. Play had stopped.
Correct. Whistle blew. Players stopped. Can’t possibly be a goal. But sky forgot to mention that fact

I've took the dog for a walk. I feel slightly better and less disagreeable. Mahrez is still wank though.

Our Achilles heal is and will always be when we have lots of possession but aren’t at it. The opposition score on the break and we all lose our shit. This will happen several times and unfortunately the killer is Europe.

It obviously doesn’t help that Pep decides to hook Silva for Mahrez which is fuckwittery of the highest order.

We came into the game hoping to make a dent on Liverpool but we got the worst result, shit happens.

Fuckin gutted, but well played Villa. They had a plan, stiffened up their midfield, attacked & defended as a compressed unit & overloaded the spaces inside, denying us space to play between the lines. Gerrard marshalled his team brilliantly.

Rodri dawdling on the ball AGAIN! He was caught dawdling TWICE in the space of a minute which gave Villa belief & roused their fans! Up until then we had everything under control, before his double brain fart!

At 70 minutes we should have swapped Haaland for Alvaréz. Julián has an effervescence that Erling doesn't possess, & we needed to press them mercilessly right across our front line. Foden yes. Silva yes. Erling no, it's not his game.

On the plus side, at least we got a point from Villa's "City Cup" final. :-/
Yeah I agree, villa were well organised and maybe we should give them more credit rather than just saying we were all shit. We weren't brilliant I know but villa played their part in that I'd say.

Your dog sounds as sensible as mine. My Daisy the doodle thought exactly the same. Mind you, when I mentioned Kyle Walker she did a particularly big shite…..

Walker definitely needs benching, had a crap start to the season especially his passing which is way off, Cancelo on the right Gomez on the left. Another player who needs to buck his ideas up is Phil, not showing anything on that left side, either Grealish or Alvarez will be getting a go soon.
Just a poor day at the office tonight and even at one nil we never looked comfortable
Thought the same with walker. Something not right he was screaming at other players in the Newcastle game. Then the tantrum at the end of the Bournemouth game. Think he’s more frustrated with his own performances more than anything

I would say Eddy was at fault for Palace's first goal last week. Poor handling lead to the free kick we conceded.
Come on, everyone knows he should have dealt with the first ball but we had the chance to properly defend the free kick but ended up conceding a comical goal.

Not really at the races today, and was gutted to see Alvarez not getting more minutes. Much the better team, but I think Villa can be rightly a bit naffed off Coutinho's goal was chalked off. Still, a point is a point and very early doors. On to next week.

Didn't think we were near it in the first half, we likely would've been if Walker squares the ball to Haaland early but not to be.

Thought the second half up until their goal we should've put them away. Erling does his usual and scores, Kev hits the bar, Haaland has two saved and Villa rode their luck and scored a cracker, sometimes you just have to say fair play to the opposition. They aren't or didn't do anything special just rode their luck and put away their only chance. It happens, that's football.

No time to dwell on it, I thought Alvarez would've given them fits but hopefully he starts against Sevilla and Haaland can have a rest with the Spurs game coming up.

Take the point and move on for me. We'll have a few more games like this during the season so no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.
Agree completely - and reassuring to read a calm, considered post. It’s a point (against a team and club who were desperate) in a long season, 3 days before an away CL tie.

I know we don’t lose many, but my gut feeling is we would’ve lost that last season, season before etc. Obviously not going to win every game and I never expect us to, but for some reason I now feel much more assured we won’t lose these kind of weird matches.

Bring on the champs league!

What has Eddie done wrong?
I'm all ears.
He was basically standing in the same corner, but for some reason bent his knees' and was not able to stop the shot directed where he was standing. A good goalkeeper would do. Please watch it again in a slow motion from the back shot .
