Athletics Thread

It's the Rome diamond league tonight. Coverage on BBC4 from 8pm, it's the first of 4 meetings in the next fortnight.

Charlie Dobson is running in a very hot looking 400m. A few other Brits are competing but it looks like Molly Caudery has pulled out again, hopefully she gets over the injury soon.

13-year-old Camryn Dailey ran an unbelievable 51.67s Over 400M.
She has already run 11.37s over 100m, and 22.90s Over 200m.
They are SERIOUS times.
A name to look out for.

Really enjoyed the Oslo DL meet tonight, always a good one.

On the day of GST cancelling its last/4th meet of the season as well. Any fan could see what they were doing just isn't sustainable. Never liked that they excluded field event athletes either.

Some of the best athletes in the world might come from North America but the home of Athletics is easily Europe.

Agree.
I must admit I didn't think George Mills had that sort of time in him. A big step up.
Mondo Duplantis reaction to another world record was good to watch yesterday also.

Compare to the crowd involvement and interaction at the US Johnson led events… Diamond League in Europe at its best is still unbeatable.

The idea of 'fixing the sport' when it isn't really that broken, I believe that's just American's comparing it to their big 4 sports and thinking they deserve more. However, when push comes to shove they don't show up and support the athletes outside of the Olympics.

If these GST sponsors love the sport so much, they should be sponsoring the diamond league.

I'd love the athletes to earn more but not at the expense of worse crowds (via more expensive tickets) and making the sport worse i.e. leaving out half of the sports competitors. Which is looking like an incredibly daft thing to do when people like Duplantis, Davis-Woodhall and Mahuchikh are some of the most popular people in the sport right now.

Yeah I think Mills has realised that 3k+ is his distance doesn't quite have the speed for anything faster. Brilliant run to take the 5k British record. A ridiculous race.

Stockholm was excellent yesterday, Duplantis and them Almgren taking the European 5k record, great atmosphere.

Lots to agree with there.

Same problem from some in cycling at the moment - it isn’t broken so stop trying to fix it (which yep, is code for making more money out of it). For us spectators and fans, the sport is perfectly fine.

I thought Stockholm was superb, the best meeting so far this season. Fantastic run from Georgia Hunter-Bell to come from last to first in the 800, she showed fantastic pace in the straight.

I should also mention Innes Fitzgerald, 3rd in her first ever DL run, think she took 7 seconds of her PB, less than a fortnight after taking 15 or 16 seconds of her 5k PB in Paris.

Some top performances in the Eugene DL last night, no spoilers in case someone hasn't watched it yet.

Watched Molly Caudery me make her comeback today, vaulted really well, cleared 4.80m in very hot conditions in Athens.

First women in history under 2 hours 10 minutes, destroyed the old world record.

She's still running and striding out afterwards to celebrate, unbelievable.

Shouldn't be the way we think but it's so quick it'll almost certainly raise a few eyebrows. She looks like she hasn't broke a sweat at the end.

Insane performance.

Kibiwott Kandie the latest elite Kenyan to be banned for doping.

I was reminded of this when it was announced.

Pretty much why I raise my eyebrows at any world records broken now. Still don't believe the women's marathon record is legit either.

Least surprising doping suspension ever:

It was pretty obvious she was at it.

Genuinely think they have to consider suspending Kenya from World Athletics now, or only allow Kenyan's with a solid biological passport to compete.

These athletes are robbing moments from clean athletes, it's fraud and deserves a harsher punishment.

Start suspending athletes for life.

Her agent, highly controversial, represents some of the best in the world, serious questions need to start being asked of these athletes.

Daryll Neita is the only Brit represented by him, questions have to be asked of her if she stays with him.
Can they sanction the agents, and drive athletes away from them, or do you think it’s ultimately on the athletes to know everything they’re given, use, take, subject themselves to?

It feels like a constant game of Whack-A-Mole, where the sanctioned actions never seem to stop. Maybe a lifetime ban is ultimately the only way, but that, too, just feels like an unending series of lawsuits waiting to happen.

Getting doping/cheating out of sports, especially personal endurance and elite individual performance sports like cycling and T&F athletics, seems almost impossible at a time when it’s needed more than ever.

She tested positive for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), and it wasn't even borderline. Her levels of HCTZ was 3,800 ng/ml. The permissible limit is 20 ng/ml.

HCTZ in doping is primarily used as a masking agent for other substances. If it's a genuine test result (not a contaminated test - highly unlikely) then she's bang to rights and should receive a lifetime ban from the sport.

World Athletics has the power to ban agents from the sport and in turn the athletes they represent. Coe needs to pull his finger out with regards to doping, the sanctions and punishments aren't harsh enough.

Rosa has been involved in too many doping cases now.

Lifetime ban is the only way forward for me but retrospective punishments are required too, removing any record or time they have achieved from the history books. Recouping prize money (maybe delaying award of the prize money too), if they can't get it from the athlete then go after the Federation they were representing during the race too.

I think it's the most obvious doping case we've ever had, her performance in Chicago was such an anomaly that she had to be doping. Journalists even questioned it post race and it got brought up in Kenyan Parliament.

Unfortunately masking agents are only 2 year bans which is ridiculous as it's masking a performance enhancer. Like you say it's so far above the level, makes you wonder what they were hiding.

Lifetime bans are the only way forward for me, start setting an example.

Bang out of order!! I was in the race when she broke the record in Chicago 'probably' would have beaten her if not for the drugs......and drink and 20 years of smoking... But that's not the point, I want my money back

I like the idea of banning Gepetto and Pinocchio for a season or two, then a lifetime ban for any subsequent offence.

I like the removal of any and all records held, even after a first offence.

I like withholding of purses until all testing for a meet is completed (in a reasonably quick timeframe!), which would then not require the clawing back of monies from the cheats.

One only needs to watch Icarus to be literally dumbfounded by the illicit trade in doping throughout sport.
