Thing is bet Boyata plays now I think thats more of a risk than playing Barker

Short memory. Sunderland away.

Risk of playing Barker or any youngster that isn't ready is denting the confidence of that player. That's why we have to leave these kind of decisions to the people who know on a daily bases.

Absolutely.

Spot on. It would be great to bring one or more of the academy players on but surely it's got to be when we have the game tied up. If they are brought on too early and as a result have a bad game then the only thing that's going to happen is that their reputation and confidence is damaged which could only have bad consequences for them. We need to build and nuture the academy players if they are going to be part of a future first team.

Not to mention fans that have zero patience to give a youngster time.

I think we should have an academy player on the bench for nearly every game them if we have put a game to bed, throw them on for the experience and give a first teamer a rest

What would a youth player have to do to deserve 20 minutes against a championship side in your eyes?

Ideally a lot more training with the first team and when we are comfortably in front to do so barring any injuries. We aren't in a competiton to bring in the most EDS kids for the sake of it.

But we are trying to build a sustainable club. Homegrown, and particularly club trained players are really important for the CL, if we never try any out we're deliberately hindering ourselves for short term gain over long term.

They have to sufficient quality and the most important part Manuel Pellegrini and team mates has to trust them. We can't throw in the kids for the sake of it. Lopes (another kid who is expected to go onto brighter things) but struggled against Watford in the FA Cup and was loaned out in the summer.

I've said before that having 2 fullbacks and a centre half, along with GK, on the bench is unnecessary and doesn't leave us with many options for the other 3 spots.

However it will be a long time before we see a first team player, such as Kolarov or Sagna, left out of the squad to make space for an 18 year old like Barker or Celina.

Why not?

Why can't we throw kids in for the sake of it?

Lets suppose we introduce an EDS player against borough and he has a reasonable /good game but we lose. He would probably not be seen again on the bench this season as all we have left to fight for will be the League and CL and as others have said, we would not have someone drop out to let an EDS player warm the bench on his behalf.

How would that affect his mental state. Was used, played well and now ignored.

There is only one right time to introduce these players and that is when the club deem them competent enough.
None of us on here can make that call
