I think, I'm in some sort of parallel universe here, where we get rid of one ageing full back and replace him with another!!
no, you`re in a universe where we replace one ageing over the hill, fullback with a old, but still world-class fullback. while we at the same time replace another ageing, over the hill fullback with a younger, brilliant fullback.

bizarre how people complain about this. worst case scenario we get a world class stop gap until we find the right man.
We will see an all time great in a City shirt next season, not far off his full potential. We used to have Danny Mills.

And for those of u screaming Maicon. He was already on a serious decline when he came here. Alves isnt

There really is no winning on here. We buy potential like Sterling or Stones and people complain they are years away from being the finished product. We look to buy experience and one of the games greatest RB's and people complain they aren't long term enough.

There's also a vast middle ground.

He's 34 and right at the very end of his career. We just got rid of fullbacks that are younger than him FFS.

Pass, regardless of how good he is.

So let me see if I get you right;

- You admit he's world class and is currently performing at a level above and beyond every other fullback in the PL.

- You still don't want him because he's older than Zabaleta.

That about right?

Probably not the same people saying both and anyway they are entitled to share their opinions in this forum.

I'd be delighted with Alves (prefer him to Walker tbh) but if others think he's not the right signing that's ok too.

The amount of times last season our fullbacks had acres of time and space to do something creative in the final third against parked buses and made a balls of it was atrocious. Dani alves is probably the most technically gifted right back in the game right now and will improve our productivity in the wide areas tenfold. The other right back we sign will be for the tough games where we need stamina and pace going forward and defending. It's a no brainer imo.

Be great if this transfer goes through and one or two good years with him would be brilliant. I also think he would help the likes of Sane and Sterling massively.....and his experience would be a big plus....get it sorted.

Why didn't Pep signed him last season ! He was available for FREE.

I was thinking the same. We do have some history to cock things up. When Demichelis leave Málaga as free agent we didn't sign him. We sign him from Atlético for less than two months where he had yet to make an appearance. Fee was £4.2 million. Nice business.

Where on earth did I say that?

Alves said he had offers from PL clubs, but he wanted to play in Serie A.

Oh sorry, you mentioned a "middle ground", which indicated you accepted both arguments to a certain degree (ie, he's a consensus word class RB but is 34)

I guess you're just another naysayer who knows nothing about him other than his age then.

No brainer for me, imagine having the option of rotating Alves and Walker on one side and possibly Mendy and Bertrand on the other. That's insane squad depth.

Bear in mind that Alves was probably the best right back in Europe last season and Walker has consistently been one of the top 2 right backs in England for 2 or 3 seasons. One has premier league experience and one has champions league experience; Pep could work wonders with those 2.
Agree totally with this. It would be the perfect situation and he could help Walker improve leaps and bounds.

He's a winner. We need players with his size of ego in the squad if we are going to really compete in the CL.

It does look like Juventus have used him mostly in the Champions League and in Serie A they've used him more sparingly. Dani Alves took the CL squad position, but Lichsteiner was not named. Lichsteiner was also one of the best right backs in his time. At his peak he was as good as Alves.

I would like to hear from fans who know what the current Alves is like. I'd also like to know how this impacts on Walker. Are we still in for him? We still need a right back as cover. Maybe that's Maffeo, or maybe we think Alves can do the job for a season and we can strengthen again in another window.

Daniel Levy has been accused in the past of treating his first team squad as real estate

I'm guessing because we still had Zabba & Sagna on the books along with Maffeo
On one of the 93:20 podcasts they interviewed the guy that wrote peps book and he said pep wanted to sign fullbacks last summer and he wasn't able to get them, could be Alves, he said he had offers that he turned down last summer

At this present time we have no RB's. Levy knows this so if we bid 35m for Walker he just says i want 40m. We bid 40m he says i know want 45m, knowing we're getting more desperate the closer to the start of the season. Signing Alves first might keep Walkers price down as Levy wont want to be stuck with an unhappy player.

For one season, yes, but we probaply need to get another RB in 2019-2020 season, at the latest.
