I find it hard to like any sculpture that keeps dropping huge bits of itself on peoples' heads.

I heard that a turd shaped piece landed on a pigeon head....The bird ended up in a ironic iconic clonic state.

I actually quite liked 'B of the Bang'.

Good tastes brings it's own rewards my friend.
I thought the 'B of the Bang' was genuinely iconic and it was Manchesters answer to the 'Angel of the North'
It should have been modified, made safe and kept. Alas it was not to be.

I hated it.
Rusty and just looked a mess to me.
If it was on a hillside and didn't rust, it would have been great.

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium Development and Collar Site (cont

I thought it was a waste of money but when I saw it I loved it and was sorry to see it go.

Just got back from the gumball at the etihad .they were busy working up on the south stand roof putting scaffolding railings up .several panels at the side have been taken out and some of level 2 is open to the elements.further round another hole in the side with a rubbish shute looks like they are gutting it out.no idea how to post pics if anyone can tell me will post them up

Had it been odne in Paris or the states or just about any other major City it would have been a bright shiny thing that looked immaculate - as it was it was a rusting pile of shite that kept loosing bits of its self

Brilliant concept but utter utter shite implementation

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium Development and Collar Site (cont

Should never have been built. An eyesore and a waste of money.

I liked it, thought it looked good. What was the problem with it? Were the welds breaking?
I liked it, thought it looked great, especially when coming into manchehester on the train.

I read a report in a magazine regarding why it had bits falling off. The original plans had the long spikes made in single long pieces of plate metal, rolled and longitudinally seam welded. It would appear that to make fabrication easier, they did not do it in single lengths, but made them in two separate sections joined by circumferential welds. It was these circumferential welds which cracked causing the end bits to become detached and drop off. Shame really that they did not fab as planned, as I’m sure there would not have been a problem had they done so.

Ahh, so the rusty look was actually deliberate? I'd never heard of Corben before, I always wondered why they didn't paint it or something.
I personally loved it, except for the bits falling off.

I know a couple of miserable sod/so called 'realists' who can't stand s sculptures et al....but even they loved this.

Interesting to hear about the fabrication issues.

Also rumours in the bowels of this thread of another large scale sculpture planned (by Anish Kapoor who designed the Olympic stadium sculpture).

Haha...I think it predated that to be fair.
They could utilise that 'slide that's never used' at the Aquatic Centre and paint it chrome if they want to run with that idea.

Petrusha - spotted that Telegraph article yesterday. Small titbits re Abu Dhabi, but god knows how much info Howard's holding back with regard to investment into Manchester. The Chinese, Abu Dhabi and Tomorrow project details must be bursting at the seams to come out.

I prefer the shiny chess peices we have commisioned with the artists refund, however the B of the Bang wasnt for me so anything was likely to be an improvement in my opinion.
