Seemed a no brainer to me at the time to propose a cricket ground with a roof on, but understand LCCC not wanting to relocate from their spiritual home. They have done great work in developing Old Trafford but the mish mash of stands have left it looking like a modernised Maine Road !
The proposal 20 years ago for a cricket ground at Eastlands, and the rival bid from Wigan, to replace Old Trafford didn't involve putting a roof on the venue. That's clear from the above mockup by Sheppard Robson.
As far as I know, the current comments from the ECB are the first time anyone from a body with influence in the game in this country has spoken about the possibility of a fully covered venue. I do agree, though, that they should have been thinking about it before now, but the absence of plans no doubt came down to a lack of money.
