future expansion

i was told a few years back (before Mansour) that we could add 10,000 by lowering the pitch further and putting more seats in at the bottom (plenty of space on all sides) However this would not be done in close season and we would have to play elsewhere for a year

No mate, that has already been done, that is where level 1 has come from.

Don't think you need to take the whole roof off, the south stand part of the roof was added after conversion from the games.

while the roof was not in place, the tension cabling system was

the roof works as one large system, it will all have to come down if we want to expand

surely they can build temp supports for the tension cable while they build the expansion and when the whole of the old roof isnt needed take down temp supports.

yes i know - but apparently there is room to do further

Maybe a couple of rows, as you excavate down you also have to excavate inwards, so each row of seats on each side of the ground would take several meters from the pitch to be fair - initially this would be from the areas around the pitch - however, to get another 10,000 seats in we'd be left watching 5 aside!

Major route to expansion is a third tier at each end but I think that will create significant if not insurmountable engineering issues with the roof and cut capacity significantly in the short term - depending upon how the work is conducted and the attitudes of the HSE and the FA.

I often wonder whether we should build a new state of the art stadium on the Casino site - now we have control of it; and when that's finished convert the existing stadium into a multi use indoor arena for concerts, athletics, motor sports etc... Just a thought but it would be a million miles better than the MEN or whatever it's called.

I'm no engineer but you are right the cables have to stay in place - they were there when there was no perm stand at the Commonwealth Games. The problem I think is the cabling system will need significant changes to support a roof at the north and south ends of the stadium which would be 20 to 30 meters higher than they are today.

Sounds like we will all be those plastic macs while we put on a new roof. How long would it take to put on a new roof? any engineers have any idea. could it be done during a close season. Engineering works at both the North & south stand and a new roof?

Wonder how many additional seats would be added by 'filling in' the corners?
Extend the 3rd tiers to the left and right to meet the start of the north/south stands.
Don't know much about it but surely that would be the least drastic way to increase capacity?... Might not get a huge amount but if would be a start.

that would affect the pitch quality
the corners open to let in a cross flow of air when the stadium is not in use.
Its thiscross flow that enables the grass to grow properly
