Gareth Bale part 2.

For a so called top 5 in the world player this thread is moving slowly it's almost meh in parts.

Perhaps just cynical but after a season or two at Madrid I doubt he'll be seen as a top 25 player.

He's brilliant at long shots and very fast but I can't see any depth or intelligence to his game beyond that. In fact I believe the only way he could play consistently for Spurs was to strip him of any tactical responsibility. He won't get that at Real and will likely be easier to keep out of games.

£75m for a Carling Cup runner up. Madness.

Whilst I agree that £75m is inflated, basing it on his team's achievements is a bit disingenuous.

Agreed. Although his individual honour list is somewhat more impressive:

- Football League Championship PFA Team of the Year: 2006–07

- Football League Young Player of the Year: 2007

- FAW Young Player of the Year: 2007

- FA Cup Player of the Round: 2009–10 5th Round

- Tottenham Hotspur Young Player of the Year: 2009–10, 2010–11

- Wales Player of the Year Award: 2010, 2011

- BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year: 2010

- BBC Wales Carwyn James Junior Sportsman of the Year: 2006

- Premier League PFA Team of the Year: 2010–11, 2011–12, 2012–13

- FWA Footballer of the Year: 2012–13

- PFA Players' Player of the Year: 2010–11, 2012–13

- PFA Young Player of the Year: 2012–13

- UEFA Team of the Year: 2011

- Premier League Player of the Month: April 2010, January 2012, February 2013

Still doesn't reflect his transfer fee. He could still develop but not to either Ronaldo or Messi's standards.

Maybe my reply is a little curt or churlish but for that price I would expect a lot more honours individual and collectively regardless of the club.

So why don't City put in a £250 million bid for Ryan Giggs.

Look at trophies he has won, He's better than Bale

Prehaps when Giggs was at his peak.

I know what you mean, but his individual achievements are pretty impressive. The fee is excessive (I think £60m in the current climate would be more realistic), but Real are prone to paying over the odds when they want a player. Often they are vindicated.

You can't base a transfer on that. If you look at a transfer in that way, what basis did Chelsea buy SWP for? Or was it simply because he was a top player at that time?

Most transfer fees are inflated, some massively so but that's just the way it is. It's wrong to base it on any particular achievement though, otherwise Ronaldo would have gone from United for £300m+/

The way the market is now and the fees being paid, £80m is where you would put Bale. Ronaldo and Messi would probably cost closer to £150m!!!

This is the exact point.

It's not the fact that he isn't worth £80mill, we all know that. It's the way the market is heading, so as you said, Ronaldo and Messi would have increased in value by now also.

Ronaldo will have decreased due to age but Messi is still young enough to be worth a mad fee like £120m
