My grandfather was working-class to the bone and barely educated given that he started part-time work at nine years old. Unlike most of his age group, he had no time for church either, he thought it was all stuff and nonsense, though I would not call him an atheist.
Yet he was capable of independent thought and had a moral compass. He had no time for bigots, I can tell you that.
What we see nowadays is mass brainwashing by simplistic, biased and partial media that positively encourages people to revel in ignorance and hate.
