Give Neil Young a testimonial

hello said:
The reason he wasn't given a testimonial was due the power struggle and ownership issues, the 3k was the contract release payment for Young to take the lesser salary offered by Rochdale in the region of £25 per week, though its documented that big Mal had promised him a testimonial when he retired, which the club then went back on.

When he finally retired he ended up with a £60 final payment and had to sign on before fitting between numerous jobs.

Young himself was very resentful towards the club and indeed boycotted the club for many years before the bog roll takeover and some kind of guest of honour peace offering.

When it was brought up on here quite recently a few of the older posters said he wouldnt want old ground to be dug up.

Still think it should be done, with Neil's blessing of course.

This is not the First time it has been mooted .but what about other ex players ? Let us remember most testimonial we have had at Maine Road the attendences have been pooor. There was a Testimonial year for Niel about 5 years ago if there was going to be a chance of a game for him it would have been then .I have met him a few times he is a nice bloke but still bitter he never got a testimonial game

Soo....errrr....does anybody know Neil Young to ask him?

Would be daft to go to a bit of trouble and then realising that we are just pissing off an ill City legend.

It would also be worth talking with the MCFC Former Players Association. They are very good at looking after former players and probably know more than any of us what support is needed by which player and why.

There are probably several former players with health and/or financial struggles. I know they try to keep tabs on all former players.

A great idea, I remember him well as a player, I would certainly support a testimonial for him, he was a good servant for the club and I think many blues would attend a game for him.
I defo would. come on MCFC give him a testimonial

Didn't someone (possibly on here) organise a 'testimonial' in the form of a series of fundraising events a couple of years ago?

Droylsden Blue or some guy from Droylsden springs to mind.

Yes you're correct it was Droylsden Blue. If I remember correctly he got very little help from the club.

Thanks. Does anyone know what the results of DB's efforts were? Did the fundraising go well?

As for a testimonial game, how many people would actually go in truth, for all the people here saying they would? I mean, Colin Bell (perhaps our greatest ever hero or certainly one of them) only got a handful in 1978 (and he was still playing for us then!).

What about Glyn Pardoe? Alan Oakes? The list goes on - I don't know the answer but if anything needed to be sorted out it should have been decades ago - and presumably Droylsden Blue's efforts, which I vaguely recall was tried to right things for Nelly.

I would suggest a testimonial game would do well to recover the costs of getting a game on (I'd love to be proved wrong) and that perhaps other fundraising efforts (perhaps paypal contributions) would be a more effective way of showing gratitude to Nelly for his efforts all those years ago.
