Give Neil Young a testimonial

Every time i have met he bores people to death about how he never got one Nice Bloke but very bitter . Le tus be honest how many would actualy turn up ? only 20,000 went to Paul Lakes & that was against the rags

20,000 x £20 is a life changing amount of money, and hopefully could help him save his leg. Hell, 10,000 x £20 is still a life changing amount of money.

This is Neil Young. The guy who scored the winner in the Cup Final in 69, the guy who scored in our last European final. He has been pissed about by successive regimes at City, and now we have some decent owners and board members, we have the chance to give him even a percentage of the happiness that he brought us. In a time where the Club are desperate to preserve our history and unite our fanbase, this would be a very classy gesture.

Perhaps it will never happen, but if one of those ex-players, the real Blue through and through guys who lived and died for us, needs the fans to go to bat for them, then the least we could do is have a go. We could help right a 40 year wrong, a stain on the history of the club.

Or we could all sit around and talk about the naming of bread?

Would you like me to ask him on Sunday morning if he'd be willing to have a game played in his honour, or have a testimonial?

Someone else will have to organise the game times and getting hold of the club etc. because I'm useless with that stuff, but I could 'get his blessing' as someone said, and someone else could start to take things forward or get a petition going etc.

It'll update on this thread or the other thread on this subject, so I'd like either to be made a sticky just to give people updates.

I'm only going to ask him if we're all serious about this.

OK so I started all this on here

But as far as a game and would anybody turn up, as I have said on earlier posts on this thread, the game could be a pre season game, plenty would turn up, just look at the Thomas Cook games.
It could be a game for Neil or Neil and the other members of the late 60 early 70 team who did not get a testimonial.

But of course only if they wanted it.

The owners and managment of the club are showing an understanding of our history, what a great way this could be, if it is done the right way

He went through all this years ago when people were trying to raise money and/or get a testimonial for him, he was going around doing after dinner speeches and once turned up at an Indian restaurant on the curry mile to talk to a bunch of City fans from the (now defunct?) international supporters' club. He must be done with all that now and has enough to think about with his health. The club should just say that all proceeds from the pre-season opener will go to Neil Young and all he needs to do is turn up and maybe wave to the crowd, nowt else. Get Gornik over here for the opener, he played against them that night in Vienna in the rain, plus Summerbee and Book were just over there renewing old friendships, that'd work.

i spoke to neil about this earlier this year , years ago he wanted the game but he said at the time when i spoke to him that he didnt anymore.

if he was suddenly offered one that may be a different story though

he had testimonial dinners and a testimonial year without the game. it wasn't rochdale he got the money for, he was told sign for preston and he'd get £3,000 cash sum. this was instead of the testimonial in the club's eyes and recorded in the club's records as so... however young thought it was part of the deal, he would move to help the club and big mal had verbally promised him a game although nothing was ever promised in writing. franny was his mate and even franny couldn't deliver a testimonial for him, because it was in the club records that the payment was neil's "testimonial" if you like... and neil didn't force the isue because he didn't want to be in a position where his mate franny woudl have to turn him down... having said that franny has helped out neil a few times with a few quid here and there...

i think with neil's health here there is a way out for the club.

neil has a better relationship with the club now, attending matches etc with his wife and he certainly wouldn't want to go back to the days of getting out the begging bowl. it was ok if it led up toa game but the fans wouldn't go for that anymore. thy ahve done that already ... and bought his book, but they would support a game in his honour.

the problem city have got is that neil has had 2 or 3 occasions where he has had "testimonial dinners" and various events. it may get one or two players back-up if he was getting "favourable" treatment.

but the man's problem is that he has had a lack of self-esteem and putting the game on would be about righting wrongs and i think the club should look at he big picture, see what a pr victory they could get from this and do it once an for all. they surely can make an exception in this one case.

no one man is bigger than the club but without his contribution we would have a much poorer history really...

it would be win-win for everyone

stage 1) fans approach the former players association and make sure all the former players agree it is a good idea

stage 2) get the osc / csa to say they would support a game for him

stage 3) approach neil and the club and say the support is there for it. designate a future pre-season game as the official testimonial , (no need for a testimonial year as he's had one) and like someone else said, get him on the pitch for a wave and job's a good'un

i say approach neil stage 3 because he is probably sick of things being started and not happening, let the momentum build first and see if the club are willing to consider it...

the club don't need the money now but if they wanted to negotiate something such as a donation from the takings to cover his medical costs, i think even that would be a good outcome for neil...

-- Wed May 19, 2010 12:01 pm --

ok i have just spoke to him on the phone, 12.45 today... he is already aware of the fans renewed interest in a game... officially he wouldn't ask for one now but deep down he would be very grateful even though it may be bitter sweet at this time as he may lose his leg...

he goes back to the specialist in a few weeks time

then will then decide whether to have one lst try with a bypass or to amputate.

neil says its looking like amputation as the veins are so bad, the circulation is so poor it may not work now....

he even joked with gallows humour "at least i can go to the pub because i'll be permanently legless" - i just said i can't believe you are joking about it

it's grim... he would need money to improve his quality of life if this happens as they would have to make adaptions to the house etc...

if it's going to happen it should happen right away really as he needs help right away

Bump!

Neil said yes. Who wants to take the reins?
As i said on your other thread .not many on here seem interested & idont think there would be a good turnout even if our Owners said yes .also i am sure other ex players on hard times might be a bit pissed of .good luck to though .I would have thought the best way to go about it is to set up a Testimonial Committee & present our Chairman with a Plan

Dear City

Please advertise our (otherwise) meaningless end of pre-season home friendly as Neil Young's testimonial and donate a decent portion (if not all) of the proceeds to the great man.

You will bring great honour on yourselves for doing this and uphold the best traditions of all things MCFC. Not to mention significantly raising the profile of the game in question and reminding the world of some of our proud history.

Thanks
BP

May be easier all to donate a tenner and not bother with a match.

I think £10 donated would be £12.50 with tax back, so 8,000 donations at £10 would be £100K.

a gent and a true legend.

it was a real joy to see him line up with the holy trinity, he and coleman were just as important, hardly mentioned and its not right.
