Worrying for labour. I've long thought Starmer might be caught napping with an early GE when he thinks he's got 4 years to turn things around. If Boris somehow gets to the Autumn with the vaccine returning some normality and even strong economic growth I think he might just decide to go for it while Labour and the SNP even (depending on the Salmond thing)are in disarray. Can't see him getting an 80 seat majority again, but possibly a workable one with tory govt then guaranteed for a further 5 years (end of 2026). The tories have a record of using national votes to settle internal disputes and consolidate (cling to) power.

He'd need Labour to back a snap-election and they surely wouldn't do that again, least of all as he might be riding a wave of vaccine triumphalism.

Unashamedly doing as his financial backers want.

The amount of negative chatter about him is on the increase, if Labour do badly in the upcoming council elections i think he is toast.
 
Like it or not, people vote for the leader and not the party. In 2019 you had the affable, blustering but essentially positive and optimistic in rhetoric Johnson vs the tetchy, permanently annoyed Corbyn with his commie hat. And unsurprisingly people preferred the former to the latter. But it's the exact same reason so many voted for Blair over Major, or Cameron over Brown. Nothing is permanent in politics, once a seat goes red / blue it doesn't stay that way forever (obviously some do but they're largely irrelevant and haven't switched for 100+ years).

By 2024, Starmer may be seen as bland and a bit boring, but he is likely to be up against one of the following;

Boris Johnson, but a much diminished one on the defensive and without the grounds for optimism he could call on in 2019
Michael Gove, who seems to be someone who inspires little passion in his favour but a lot against, and is also a bit weird
Dominic Raab, who comes over as even more boring than Starmer but much less effective at doing stuff
Rishi Sunak, the only one who could pose a real threat but then there's the whole "BAME" factor which may find many Tory voters trying to justify not voting for him

People thought boring old Joe Biden couldn't beat the flashy Trump, but he did. Yes the pandemic helped (events, dear boy) but ultimately what people wanted in America (and I think also do in this country) is boring politics for a while. I think people are more likely to go for a boring but capable guy right now than they have been for decades.

Interesting, but I disagree. Starmer, at present, is viewed as someone
who is not short of the ability to criticise, but very reluctant to offer up
any alternatives. Even after the year we've had, the Tories have recently increased their lead over Labour by another 3 points, this is unprecedented
and looks very bad for Labour. What people are tending to overlook is that Starmer was led by the nose by Corbyn, he went along with what was anathema to most voters, he went along with the in, out shake it all about
nonsensical Brexit policy. He was and still is fervently pro EU. He also attempted to prosecute dozens of journalists, an outrageous stunt that saw each and every attempt fail, with all acquitted. People remember all this, Johnson and the Tories have no need whatsoever to attack him now, but the nearer an election looms, believe me they will, they're ruthless, and very good at it.
I think once again, they've chosen the wrong man, the moon and stars better than the previous one for sure,, but still the wrong 'Type.'
Many on the left hate hearing this, but to win middle England, which is essential to winning elections, they need another Blair.

I suspect many on the left are simply more comfortable in Opposition (where they have the luxury of being able to complain about decisions of Government without having to make tough decisions or hard compromises).

I would argue that's the majority of the Labour PLP.

They proved this with their constant undermining of Corbyn. Ignoring the party members support. We might not have had Boris Von Cluster fuck in power now as I'm convinced Labour would have been in power in 2017. The labour leaks report showed their glee at the loss. Being MPs they are pretty much set up for life so fuck the rest of us.

If Blair was in power today with social media and forums, he wouldn’t stand a hope. He would be slated the same way Boris is, Starmer is, May was, Corbyn was etc - no politician today stands a chance. Everyone’s a ‘****’ apparently by our social media generation.

I've got no particular axe to grind with Burnham. It's a story planted to attack Keith from the Tory angle. Burnham would have to be an MP and I get the feeling he's been there done that.

He'd better placed where he is in case there is a labour victory and the promise to devolve more power to the region's is kept.

Or they are more comfortable sat in their mother’s spare room, in their gym bottoms, bashing away on the Internet at how unfair the world is.
