Just a bit of "left" history. Even Chartist speakers were accused of preaching to the crowd - e.g. sounding radical to get elected to the Convention then at the Convention sounding moderate. Some speakers had "one set of speeches for the North and another set of speeches for the metropolis. What Harney saw as a form of hypocrisy, Lowery defended as a form of democratic control involving the rank and file of the movement in a complex mutual relationship of expectation, performance and response".
