Keir Starmer

Jess Phillips resignation statement in full

Dear Keir
I want to start by first saying that we have worked closely together on Violence Against Women and Girls for many years and I have no doubt you have genuine knowledge and desire to rectify this dreadful social ill. We have started to make steps towards change whilst in government and I have been grateful for your support.
However, it would be remiss of me not to say that real change and direction in this area usually came from threats made by me in light of catastrophic mistakes. The Mandelson saga whenever it bubbled up made Number 10 kick into gear on the subject in order to prove our credentials. I will never waste a crisis to make advancements for women and girls and so demands were made and some were met.
I think you are a good man fundamentally, who cares about the right things however I have seen first-hand how that is not enough. The desire not to have an argument means we rarely make an argument, leaving opportunities for progress stalled and delayed.
Over a year ago I presented solutions, long worked on by brilliant civil servants that would end the ability for children in the UK to take naked images of themselves. 91% of online child sex abuse is self-generated by children groomed, tricked and exploited in to abuse. The technology exists to stop children being able to take naked images of themselves. We could make this possible on every phone and device in the country. We could stop this abuse. It has taken me a year to get you to agree to even threaten to legislate in this space. Not legislate, just threaten. This is the definition of incremental change. Nothing bold about it. The announcement was meant to be in March, I’m still on a promise this will happen in June, I’ve given up believing it. How many children were left without a safety net in the time we dilly dallied and worried about tech bosses?
This is just one example.Labour governments come around rarely is the constant refrain at the moment. It’s true they are precious. Every Labour government in my and my family’s lifetime has forged progress that changed our country and the world for the better. I know you care deeply, but deeds, not words are what matter. I’m not sure we are grasping this rare opportunity with the gusto that’s needed and I cannot keep waiting around for a crisis to push for faster progress.
Decency is vital, calm curiosity is also needed, but so too are fight and drive required. Have a row, push back, make arguments, bring people along. Standing up and being counted can’t always be workshopped. Politics is as much about feelings as policy, especially at the moment.
I want a Labour government to work and I will strive as I always have for its success and popularity, but I’m not seeing the change I think I, and the country expect, and so cannot continue to serve as a minister under the current leadership.
Straight onto the podcast with Rigby to "explain her decision" shortly.

I can only speculate of course but here's my opinion FWIW.

1. I think rightly or wrongly, there is a large faction of our society who are deeply concerned about the levels of immigration. A small minority are just nasty racists, but trying to pretend they all far right thugs is just daft. There's millions of Brits who are worried that our Britishness is slowly being eroded away. There's also obviously concerns about unvetted illegals roaming the streets etc, whether that is statistically significant or not, it's emotive and it resonates. Farage has tapped into these concerns.

2. The public were sick and tired of the Tories, who were a shit show for much of their 14 year tenure. Labour finally got in on a landslide, not because people like Labour particularly, but because they thought "No more of this rubbish".

But after 2 years, what we have got is "More of this rubbish". Farage appeals to a very large cohort who have now given up with both main parties.

So in essence Farage in the view of the electorate is the least worse option.

He has no positive attributes or qualities, is a liar, grifter and Putin accolyte - just what else does this country really need ?

So the electorate is becoming more like the MAGA imbeciles day by day, despite the evidence of that shit at every opportunity.

Unfortunately fighting again abject stupidity is difficult.

He’s said some very suspect things about Putin and NATO, but there’s zero evidence it’s anything more than a crap opinion.

I've a question and an observation.

First the observation: The blonde Labour minister Baroness x (sorry don't know her surname) came and talked to the BBC who were waiting outside No 10 and said unequivocally that *all* of the cabinet members were fully supportive of Starmer. On face value, she appears to have just lied on camera, given that Jess Philips has resigned.

Now the question? Why has Mahmood not been fired? Is it OK to call for your boss to resign and just carry on in your own job? WTF is Starmer thinking??

Most genuine people don't speak favourably about a Putin regime if they don't support it.

How can they ?

Farage is a 100% ****
That's far too simplistic, and frankly a weak argument. I can speak favourably about Jeremy Corbyn who I admire for his principled stance on things, irrespective of political cost, and for his honesty.

But I am not a fucking Jeremy Corbyn supporter.. God help me if I were.

His comments are mixed, he’s called Putin clever and also criticised NATO for expanding East, to be clear I think that’s a garbage opinion so not defending it, that doesn’t make him an acolyte or a secret ally as you’ve suggested though.

Sky News has just reported some details of what went on at the Cabinet meeting today. Apparently, Starmer told the Cabinet that no one has followed the correct process for replacing him, so he was not even going to discuss it at the meeting. If anyone in Cabinet wanted to discuss it, he would have a one-on-one meeting with them. But when the meeting closed and he was asked for a one-on-one meeting, he refused to have it.

How come there is very little outrage about the £5 million the frog faced **** received from a donor yet endless media coverage about a donation of a few thousand towards spectacles that Starmer received that went on for days and weeks.
Maybe something to do with Starmer banging on about ending cronyism and freebies for years, only to be caught indulging in cronyism and freebies, minutes after becoming PM? And maybe because he is the PM and Farage isn't?

And you downplay the freebies which amounted to £100k.

I won’t disagree with that. It’s one of his worst features.
One of his worst features. That's a massive red flag and one that should have any decent, right-minded person not going anywhere near him. The other big red flag is that he pushed for Brexit which most economists have said has cost this country £40 billion in lost tax revenues to the treasury.

Opinions are like arseholes aren't they. You see I could say precisely the same about Starmer and anyone who supports him, particularly the last sentence.

There is a massive difference between £100k and £5 million. It's more than just coincidence that the money is being donated by a crypto billionaire and Farage and reform are pushing policies that favours crypto billionaires. Farage is corrupt as fuck. He's a phoney and a fraud. All this man of the people shit.My arse. I've seen pictures of him in his private members club sipping Champaign. He's only seen supping a pint of beer when the cameras and the media are around to fool people into thinking "I'm one of you". What a complete charlatan. He's fooling people at the moment but it won't last.

Apparently, he refused to see Streeting after that meeting this morning. Which probably isn't that much of a surprise, given he's a potential challenger for the gig. They can’t be that far short of the magic 20% (82) figure that any challenger would need to be nominated by, in order to stand. The number was 70 yesterday evening. And I doubt it's dropped in the meantime.

You may be right. Time will tell.

Unrelated I hope we do push ahead with crypto reforms. There is massive vested interests of our FS industry which does *not* want people to be able to hold or transact their own money, they want you to store it in their bank whilst paying you 0.1% interest. This is holding us back at the expense of us, the public. This means people with a few Satoshis and a couple hundred quid in bitcoin being punished by a bent FS industry.
