What amuses me most about the present day Liverpool, is they like to push the narrative that they are the plucky underdogs, single handily fighting against the evil of MCFC. Not just for themselves but as the saviours of football itself.
I had a Twitter conversation with a journalist last week, who kept insisting that there was no longer “ a level playing field” I pointed out that there has never been a level playing field. And the last thing Liverpool actually want is a level playing field. They don’t want Southampton to be in a financial position to tell them to sling their hook every time they unsettle their star players and eventually poach them. They don’t want Wolves to be in a position to tell them they’re keeping hold of their star striker when they come knocking.
There are only a handful of clubs in the world who have the financial clout of Liverpool. Their problem isn’t a lack of a level playing field. It’s that they are no longer at the very top of it.
